Welcome to Baltimore: Ja'Kobi Lane

Me watching the draft: “I’m not sure about this one, might be the first miss of the class”

Me after watching the video: “HES THE NEXT DEZ BRYANT, HE AIN’T LETTING HIS MAMA DOWN”

great vibes with him and the coaching staff too on that call

Just watched a highlight reel. Lane has some vice grip hands! And great focus on the contested catches. That's no accident being that he was coached and mentored by Todd in HS. For those of you who didn't get to see Heap play in his prime, he caught pretty much everything he could touch and regularly made circus catches.

This applies to Sarratt as well, but since there’s more discourse on Lane, I’m posting here

But they went out and got a couple of alphas and ball getters. They don’t shy away any time the ball is in the air. They act like they’re the only ones that can get it, which I think is the biggest departure from how we’ve operated at the position in recent years. Of course Zay also fits the bill, but I think you’d be hard pressed to say we’ve had anyone else in our room aside from end of the line OBJ and DHop that has had that mindset.

The thing I really like about lane is that the tools to find his route game are absolutely there, he went higher than I expected for sure but his ball skills are actually rare. This ain’t Jaleel Scott or miles Boykin, this guy can really go up and get it like no other ravens draft pick has ever been able to, Demetrius Williams had some crazy highpoints, maybe Travis Taylor, but all in all I don’t think we’ve ever drafted a guy with raw ball skills like Lane.

I'm just so confident that he's not what the consensus seems to be on him. He'll be a good route runner. Give him a good NFL offense with an actual QB, let him run digs and slants and drag and over routes and not just 9 balls and see how his separation grades changes.

i dont know how consistent he is in contested situations - statistically he's not that special

but i would describe him as having arrogant hands (complimentary) - he has the physical length and skill to just decide that the ball is his

i know ive been the guy pouring cold water on the pick, but i do like him - my hesitancy is his fit and role - the expected outcome for him is a guy who can be a volatile deep threat, he's not a great fit for slot work - so if he wants to be anything more than just a vertical jump ball guy, he's going to have to become a press-beating savant - he's definitely got the physical tools to do that

i do think he has physical limitations with his deceleration - my concern would be that he's not able to effectively win on comebacks and digs because CBs can outbreak him

very happy for that kind of outcome
i think it's clear from the way that EDC talked about him and sarratt, that they see Lane as an "x" - which means he's going to have to beat press, which he doesnt do right now

He will. The coaches know exactly how to coach him up on his deficiencies. Let's give them a chance...

I completely agree with Todd Heap's assesment on Lane's game. He's huge and athletic and has great hands but what separates him from other guys like him is he has real flexibility in the lower half. His ankle flexion and COD is truly different.

I finally had a weekend with nothing to do but rest, so I decided to watch the doco on/by Lane, made in the days leading to the combine and draft. Kid is great, I like him a lot. There's a little bit of Zion Young in there, too.

A long watch but enjoyable.

I finally got around to watching it last night. I thought it was a cool watch. I was surprised to see him and Zion were friends. They seemed like opposites from what i initially knew about them.

Also, NIL had these boys living crazy lives in college lol

A little nugget I caught, sounded like Zion had the opportunity to transfer to Georgia but they told him he was too small coming out of high school and he held it against them lol
