I am relieved that scumbag Larry Nassar will be incarcerated until his dying day.

what's crazy is he got off lightly - he only got about 1 year per victim he abused even if the top end of his sentence were to be carried out (obviously he'll be dead well before then)

i just find it crazy how complicit the umbrella organisation is/was in this systematic abuse...

The govt is alive again and the party in power still isn't doing anything about infrastructure, immigration, education, campaign finance reform, criminal justice reform, the trade deficit, the skills gap, stagnating wages, healthcare, or renewable energy. Hell, Trump just hurt renewable energy. What exactly does the modern GOP do, anyway?

I'd say those tariffs on solar panels and washing machines count as trying to cut the deficit. Granted it was a dumb idea under Bush and it was a dumb idea under Obama (which I've already gone into detail on) and it's a dumb idea under Trump. The best case is that it causes minor (but expensive with the consumer footing the bill) benefits and the worst case is that it leads to a full-blown trade war in which no-one in the world comes out better off.

There are unfair trade practices that China in particular engages in, but that's why the WTO was established - so you can impose tariffs that can't lead to retaliatory tariffs under international trade law (iirc the Obama administration went 15-0 in WTO cases against China) - but the Trump administration's been busy blocking and delaying judicial appointments there so I'm not sure how much good that would do. The other, most reliable, way to improve the trade deficit is to increase your own competitiveness. I'm looking at buying a new car at some point in the medium term and I can say that the chances of me buying an American car are near zero - the Germans post surpluses pretty much every year for a reason. By the established definition of capitalism and socialism in this thread (about competition vs control) tariffs fall firmly on the socialist side of things.

Oh no, he ain’t getting off lightly. Just wait until he gets introduced to the inmates for some more correction!

Rand Paul introducing a bill to end aid to Pakistan and supply it to American Highway infrastructure

Not bad but I'm not sure what the point is beyond symbolism or just showmanship. Foreign aid is honestly the most overstated part of any government's budget, and the $850 million listed makes up 0.025% of the estimated shortfall of $3.4 trillion in road investments per the Global Infrastructure Hub (which is honestly on the conservative side of estimates that I've seen but I digress). And that assumes there's zero opportunity cost in terms of regional stability (bearing in mind this is the government that's most likely to lose control of its nukes), military aid, development programs and political capital (next time someone like Bin Laden shows up on Pakistani soil), which overly simplistic given foreign aid is usually given with a fair amount of self-interest in mind. So like I say, I'm not really sure what the point is in the bigger picture.

oh for sure he's gonna be in hell for the rest of his life - it's cases like this where i wish i was religious because then i'd find some comfort that he'd burn in hell - alas im no christian or theist of any sort so i hope he lives a long life

It is a sad statement of our country's budget to think $850,000,000.00 is not a lot of money.

in terms of GDP and the size of debt - it's not...
it's the nature of inflation that's all

that's why looking at pure amounts of money is always a stupid way of looking at debt and domestic product - for me it should always be represented through a percentage value

I'll be surprised if he lasts a week. Inmates tend to hate two types. 1. Sexual assaulters/rapists 2. Pedophiles. Those types don't tend to last long and are usually targeted.

"Not a lot of money" is relative. I don't think I make an awful lot of money but I'd imagine a lot of people in Ethiopia think I'm living the high life. Likewise $850 million looks like a lot relative to what nearly every household brings in but when the federal tax take is something like $6.7 trillion a year (6.7 million millions) you can see how it doesn't move the needle at all. And the US is actually on the low end of the tax revenue-to-GDP ratio among developed countries.

That's why people have a habit of overstating foreign aid - for some reason it seems to get brought up a lot as a way to bring down the deficit but it makes up a shade over 1% of the federal expenditure (and Pakistan isn't even one of the 25 biggest recipients btw). In relative terms it's honestly not that different to cutting Anthony Levine to save cap space.

Our budget is in the trillions of dollars. Plural. Trillions with a T. It is a spark standing next to the sun. Government spending is beyond out of control.
