‘Wink’ is the New Defensive Coordinator

I keep seeing Martindale being mentioned. How good of a candidate is he in comparison to the likes of Pagano, Fangio etc?

not sure how i feel about the retirement of Pees. As much as i liked him most of the time, there is a serious serious habit of blowing late leads or not being able to get key stops when necessary. Not all of that can be on the players when its happened with so many different ones.

I have fuzzy memories of Pagano, but he didnt ever get us to the promised land. And while it can be argued it was talent, his defenses in Indy have been absolutely atrocious. I'd probably be indifferent until proven otherwise.

My preference would probably be Teryl Austin if we go outside. I really wanted to keep him around, and think he does have what it takes (with the right talent) to be a very good coordinator.

I also wouldnt hate promoting Roman to OC and bringing in Fangio.... try to reignite some of that magic from their SF days under a Harbaugh. There would be stiff competition from Shanahan and the 49ers for his services though.

I'm not even worried in the slightest. I already accepted it and denying it just delays the inevitable (again IMO).

at least the team has to make a positive decision to make it happen though - they cant just be like everything's ok as it is because then we wont have a DC lol

Martindale is unknown because he really only had one shot at being a defensive coordinator at The NFL level in 2010 which wasn't a good year for him. Of course it's reasonable to think the lack of talent on The Broncos defense would be the reason why things didn't go well . He seems to be a very well respected coach and players also seem to like him. Elvis Dumervil gave him a ring of endorsement and recently C.J Mosley has as well. Right now Pagano and Fangio would seem to be the more appealing choices but it doesn't mean Martindale doesn't have the potential to be just as good or better than them.

2006-2009, I believe, for Fangio, and there's the obvious Harbaugh connection. I think he'd be a huge addition.
I’ve liked Fangio a lot over the years. Great defensive mind. Too bad Wade Phillips isn’t available. He’d find a way to get pressure.

Welcome back and happy new year.

I’m not sure it’s a good thing or a bad thing losing Pees, but I believe some change on the defensive side is in order. I’m a fan of Fangio, Pagano and Austin. Think I’d also prefer Austin to Pagano. I’d also like to see Roman as OC, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. I certainly hope they sign a qb coach.

Just because I’m very personally invested in his growth because of how highly I rated him on my board, I might at some point this offseason go back and see if I can watch every snap and see what I liked/disliked and whether after all that I still feel like my gripe was still about his usage or whether it was disappointing progression by Timmy (or whether he just wasn’t ready yet)
I think he just wasn't ready this year. He was a fantastic prospect and has amazing physical tools. I think if we give him a year to adjust to the speed of the NFL, he'll make a jump.

Well, remember those SF defenses were crushing it with pass rushers. I prefer Fangio for the one gap scheme, but I think he could be a strong HC candidate.

He was our D.C. For one season and that was sizzles DPOY season and the last time we had a truly dominant defense, and we fell short of the SB because of lee Evans and billy cuntsniff. There's no way you can hold anything against pagano as a potential D.C. Candidate

I like Pagano but we had quite a defensive roster that year. Probably the best front seven in franchise history. Webb looked damn near Revis level. Jimmy Smith was young and promising. Cary Williams was actually used correctly and ordered to press. Reed was Reed.

Fact of the matter is that defense had four HOF level players in Ray, Reed, Suggs, and Ngata; several Pro Bowl level players like Webb and Arthur Jones; and key role players like Pernell McPhee. Again, Pagano's great, but that was very well the most talented Ravens defense, player for player, that we've probably ever seen. I don't think we're quite back at that talent level, and I'm not sure that magic can be replicated with the current cast of characters.

On the other hand, Pagano got more out of Cary Williams and Chris Carr than anybody probably could have, so, maybe he could make magic happen again.

Like someone else said, he doesn't have a ton of history to refer to, but the simple fact that they want to promote an in house candidate coupled with the fact that they never fired Pees suggests that Martindale would be the sort of guy who would maintain the status quo.
I write this because Pees voluntary departure makes me think they never saw a real problem with his methods and an in house hire looks like they want his heir.
I vaguely remember statements that Marty's playbook wouldn't be drastically different from Marc Trestman's and so the players wouldnt have too big of an adjustment etc etc...
That's what a Martindale hire means to me.
