It may be true that Pagano is not well ... in which case, we'll find out soon enough if he indicates he's retiring. However, he relatively recently took a lengthy contract, which would indicate in his mind he has more in the tank.

It is also quite possible he'll decide to chill for a year and see how he feels. However, if he decides that he still has fire in his belly and that his true love is being DC and that HC comes with a lot of crap he doesn't want to deal with, then I say we should have open arms.
 
Without getting into the deep details of Xs and Os, at a high level ... all I can say is Pagano took the passive D that Mattison was coaching - got them to be aggressive and had very positive results. That to me says a lot about what he brings. We need a defense that plays with a little more swag.

CJ Mosley even with the down year is one of the better ILBs in the game.

Suggs is still good and I think he's got another good season in him.

Eric Weddle is still a good player who will likely bounce back.

Tony Jefferson may have been underwhelming, but he's a better player than Pollard was in 2011 and I would LOVE to see what Pagano does with him because he utilized Pollard well

Marlon and Tavon are super promising. Please stay healthy.

Matt Judon is a rock solid player. His stats were inflated, but he's a good rotational LB.

There are unknowns here. But I feel as if one of Bowser and Williams would do more than pan out under Pagano.. IF not both.

I also feel as if Pagano would be able to draw a few players here both due to Colts players and because of his previous tenure here being successful. Paul Pousluzny anyone? Vontae Davis(well aware of his struggles over the past season or two. He wouldn't be too expensive coming off of injury and it could work as a low risk high reward thing ). Darius Butler? Jack Mewhort? Donte Moncrief?

This would be good in several ways. Could save Harbaugh's ass tbh.

Wonder if we’d get a chance to get Ted Monachino back as OLB coach if Pagano is signed as dc

The '06-'10 defenses were also quite good, generally speaking, and he wasnt coordinating them.

I also wouldnt be against it... just indifferent. Not as excited as most seem. 1 good year as a DC is not a trend.

The talent level in Indy certainly plays a part, it is horrid, possibly the worst in the league.

And that dominant defensive roster we had was special, but that 2011 defense truly stood out among the pees and mattison defenses, 2012 had a very similar roster and wasn't nearly as good, 2010 the same deal, both struggled with late meltdowns, paganos did not. They shined when playing with a lead.

because when he had a lead, he made sure to try and pour it on the other team.

I think this is the thing to underscore, the attitude that he would give this D.

Exactly. I want to see our defense strike fear into opposing quarterbacks again.
