The Stout, the Defense, and the Offence

He looks sloooooww. Like 60% normal speed and quickness. He looks afraid to get hit inside or outside of pocket too. Feels over the top to me, as if there is a directive to just stay healthy, play safe, do just enough, hope he heals for when it counts the most.
Seems more of a mental issue than physical. Like the nicks got into his head and, as you say, he’s afraid. Hopefully that’s gone by Thursday night.

Cut that film on bruh. It was a good game from him from an overall perspective. Still some head scratcher plays in there but the pass protection and mental processing was pretty damn good. Was surprisingly impressed by his recognition this week. The Twitter clips are not representative of the total game. There's a reason people are only highlighting the bad.
If I’m not mistaken he had the key block on Henry’s first TD.

Of all the weeks, this isn't the week to complain about the Oline. Collectively had probably their best game of the year.

Relax bro! geez. lol. Didn’t mean I think he isn’t nicked, just that it’s also gotten into his head and has affected his whole game.
I'm genuinely curious... what about his performance indicates it's in his head?

He's neither hanging in or bolting at daylight and gives himself up instead of making anything close to a sharp cut. Like his entire decision process is out of whack because he he's not used to playing like this.

I don't know that I'd call that any sort of mental yips though. I've seen a guy over the last couple of games that has tried to hit 'go' but there's no giddy up behind it. I know we're all accustomed to seeing him take those runs but if he physically can't do it, then I don't think that's a mental block. That's a guy realizing what's realistic and trying to play the best he can within those limitations.

I have much greater concerns about the play calling not accounting for his physical condition. The OL isn't great and the routes are all long developing. It works when your QB is mobile and can keep plays alive. There's very little designed to counteract those 2 problems currently.

Not saying Lamar is infallible by any means but I don't believe there's anything in his head holding him back.

Maybe I'm wrong, but to me he looks indecisive, jittery, like he's afraid to make a mistake. Missing open receivers and passes he usually makes with ease, etc..

I'm confident playing in prime time on Turkey Day against a divisional opponent is going to sharpen LJ's focus, put him in a place where he will excel throwing the ball, regardless of whether he can move as he wants to.

G play has swapped yet again. Faalele is catching a lot of heat (per usual) but had a solid game. Vorhees dipped back to really bad.

not a good run blocking game

faalele has been the better pass blocker
but i dont think the difference is enough to say he's not still the weakest link on the OL

this offence's biggest struggles are in the redzone where faalele is at his most consistently bad

he's always been ok at least in pass pro
but he almost individually tanks the running game

not true at all
he's hanging in a long time - the difference is he's getting sacked more because he's not got the athleticism with his injuries to help him escape right now

you definitely see his timing being off but that's also partly down to receivers, routes and whether guys are actually separating - and there's definitely a few plays a game right now where it feels like his internal clock needs to be quicker or you can see the plant and drive in his throw are wrong (leading to inaccurate throws), which again is an obvious side effect of a leg injury

where's the first down play-action?
where's the quick slants and quick outs to stay on schedule?
where are the designed cover 2 beaters

teams have been really predictable, clogging up the middle of the field defensively, we need to have the answers to the questions posed by those defensive looks

It’s maddening how we’ve dealt with this issue literally forever. We just don’t do the things schematically that teams do to counter certain things.

Why does it feel like we’re the only team who will continue to drop deep or run right up the middle against defenses who are selling out to stop exactly those things?
