The Turnovers, the Offense and the Running Game

A few thoughts from this game:

1. Roquan looks pretty good! I don't know what changed, but he looked like an entirely different player this game compared to last week. He was fast, around the ball, decisive, and quick. It was a sight to see.
2. Teddy Buchanan looks awesome as well. I need to see if there was a higher snap count for him compared to Simpson this game, because I am wondering if maybe Buchanan got more snaps and brought stability next to Roquan. Either way, I liked what I saw from Buchanan.
3. Hummel had that great blocked punt. Really was a nice ST play, first in a long time.
4. Hopkins was awesome, vintage even, and really showed he can still play. He and Lamar have a very good chemistry.
5. I didn't realize how much we depend on Patrick Ricard. He is really pivotal to what we do.
6. Henry didn't have a great game. He sort of vanished in this one.
7. Our entire run game struggled hard against this team. Even Lamar didn't do much running the ball. It's like we got away from it entirely.
8. Our OL isn't looking good outside of Stanley and Linderbaum.
9. Rosegarten really regressed from last year. He needs to quickly turn it around.
10. Bateman and Andrews are both kinda quiet so far this year. Andrews is really underperforming.
11. Lamar had an eh game. In some ways I sort of blame the OL. But I also am wondering why he isn't trying to buy more time with his legs, moving out in motion to hit guys, etc. It was kinda weird. It could explain our bad OL because it doesn't seem he is making up for it anymore after 2 games.
12. I thought coaching was better in 2H.
13. Loop's inability to get the ball in-bounds beyond the 20 on kick-offs is a major problem they need to quickly solve.

The only "silver lining" in response to what I bolded is that not every defense has a front line as physical as the Browns'.
Still crazy that the amount of good defensive lines we play every year and EDC still thinks mid-round to average guards are the best way to counter it. I think someone else said it already but if something happened to Linderbaum, the line is toast. EDC has got to take the interior of our line seriously for once.

Something super encouraging is how well our pass game to the WRs seems to be working. We’re passing the ball incredibly well despite missing the guy who is either 1 or 2 in target priority. Andrews looks like asshole right now and our TEs aren’t really a factor in the pass game, our pass pro was awful today, Lamar was off for the first quarter, but the pass game still cooked today.

Big development from Lamar to see this production and rhythm without leaning on the TEs, historically he has.

I hope when Likely comes back, this continues and he doesn’t start forcing the ball to the TE. Add Likely to the fold and distribute the ball evenly, it’ll make us that much more dangerous.

That's true, and Mike Green even had some nice plays today! I forgot about him. Wiggins, Hamilton, Green all showed up to play. You know who has been quiet? Odafe Oweh.
Green had maybe the best rush I’ve seen from a raven since dumervil today. Didn’t result in a sack but his bend and motor showed up on that one snap where he wrapped joes ankles and forced an incompletion, it was beautiful.

And yeah, oweh had a huge hit on Joe early in the game but it was very close to RTP, and that’s all I’ve seen. I was worried he was a space player who needs all his speed and agility, and the added weight might affect him negatively. I think he shows us more though, I don’t think owehs a bad player at all, but I guess if he’s gonna play heavier he’s gotta learn how to make it translate

And he needs to do better drafting G in round 3/4/5. Plenty of guards are doing well in the range we’re drafting them, ours aren’t, because we aren’t drafting the right ones.

It's not that, we haven't drafted a guard in the first round since 2007 in Ben Grubbs. We aren't investing high picks in them, mid round picks are the only ones being invested in them.

So around draft time, there was a debate over whether Bateman was worth trading for a 3rd. To me it seemed like an obvious yes because he is worth nowhere near that. I did not expect that to be a controversial take but having watched him play for 2 weeks, forget a 3rd but a 4th or a 5th to give him away would have been worth it. He has just been awful to start this year and has done nothing that the other WRs do not do better. His snaps just seem like a complete waste.

If other guards drafted in these mid rounds are doing well and ours aren’t, then clearly we just need to stop drafting shitty G prospects, because going back to 2022 there was not a G prospect available for us in the first round. Jonah savaiinaea this year over starks, that’s it, and that’s yet to be seen if he’s even a good player.

Cam jurgens or Luke goedeke over ojabo in R2 would’ve been the only play over all these years.

Bateman only got 2 good targets and one went for 12 yards and a broken tackle for a first down.

All his targets were covered.

Browns are a really good defense with a cb tandem that you can probably call elite by now.

And Bateman has always seemed to need a few weeks of game action to catch on. I’m not writing him off at all.

Good gameplan from Harbaugh, matter of attrition to just keep stopping the Browns and then strike when opportunities presented tbemself, but overall a pretty safe gameplan. Good to see how the offense will respond when they can’t get Henry going, I wonder if Mitchell could help spark the run game in a game like this, Hill wasn’t doing much.
