2018 Forum Mock: Discussion Thread

Still looking to shop Mohammad Wilkerson. He's 17 stars but if you look at FA prices he's not breaking the bank.

I posted this in the random thought thread, but I wanted to mention that it is possible the Compensatory picks become official as early as today. Since teams are eligible to trade these picks, it's likely we know what they are before the combine, which is a week from today.

For rookies to the Forum Mock. If you have compensatory picks, please add them to your SoF.

From what I have heard as well they will be released sometime today.

word is that they'll come out just before the league office closes at around 4pm EST

That solidifies my oline at least in the short term. Strief is easily a massive upgrade over Barksdale. His game ages well and once again, Melvin Gordon is very happy. I wasn't going to use Brown so I figured an oline upgrade would do well for Rivers and Gordon. The offense is now set.

Important Note:

The restructure will has been updated. It's a bit more complex. It's been changed to reduce solely the base salary. The base salary will now be reduced by 50%. However, there is a ceiling cap on the savings. No restructure can incur savings over 30% of the cap hit of the player. This means that you essentially run two minor calculations and take the lowest number. This rule is to be implemented immediately and applied retroactively. Some will be unaffected. For example, Joe Flacco's savings would not reach the ceiling due to his low base salary, so he'll save 6 Stars either way. Russell Wilson's savings in this scenario will save 7 Stars, which is 1 Star higher than the contract would've saved under the previous version of the rule.

Completely understandable. Feel free to refer to other peoples' entries for reference.

Not a big deal and I think it's a great change, but I kinda wish this would have been implemented before trading and cuts started. I think it's a bad idea to change rules at this point.

Fair point. That being said, the restructure rule was already in place. It was placed into the rule book right as the cut thread was being opened up, so it was a re-tweaking instead of a full-scale change or a new implementation. As it stands, it may have no effect on multiple teams that have chosen to restructure. At best, it might save an additional Star or two. I personally doubt that this would've had much effect on the recent moves, if any at all.

agree, it wouldn't have made a noticeable difference to change someones mind one or the other. At least with the restructures that were already in place.

@Giants56Ravens52 It's also more realistic restructuring contracts using base salary as that is how it's done in the NFL. They take the base salary and convert it to guaranteed money, which allows them to spread the guarantees over the life of the contract, cutting down on the initial years cap hit.

The reason for the maximum is to keep teams from taking advantage.

Well I think it would more be in a case of someone trading a higher contract player for less so they could June 1st them and get something out of it in lieu of a cut to free up cap space, instead of the restructure where the difference between 25-50% can make a huge difference in keeping them.

Yes, but theoretically, a scenario akin to the one above wouldn't be overly feasible. The restructure rule was introduced at roughly the same time as the cuts and tenders thread was created. It was mentioned after one release was made, that being Lardarius Webb, whose savings were 2 Stars, so he was unaffected by the implementation. The trade thread wasn't created until 13 hours after the rule was placed into the rule book and explained in the Discussion thread. Since then, three teams have chosen to restructure. Collectively, they saved 15.5 Stars. After the tweak, collectively, they save 16.5 Stars. Two of the three contracts remain unchanged and the remaining contract gains one additional Star in savings. That's because the ceiling cap prevents significant leaps in savings due to the sliding scale. This means that teams' approaches towards their contracts would've been mostly unchanged in contrast to either version of the rule. It'd be different if it were a massive change in savings, but given its minor impact on a fiscal level, it'd be difficult to fathom it having a significant effect on whether or not any move thus far has been affected by the change.

Yeah it doesn’t change my decision - just I need to go back and tweak the maths a little bit (will do later)

Good to hear. If you're the Titans, I've already done it for you. You were the one with the savings of an extra Star. I've updated your SoF.

Thanks - I assumed it was me because most of his contract was base salary - but thanks for doing it for me
