The 2021 Offseason Thread

Given how Averret has been playing I don’t think we will keep him in the roster. There has to be a team willing to trade at least a 5th for him and I’m sure we’ll take that given he’s in a contract year. Even with him gone we’ll have marlon, peters, jimmy, tavon, wade, and westry who thus far has shown he could be a serviceable depth piece outside.

nah - you can never have too many corners - he was our CB 5 last year too and we still ended up with games where we had scrubs at CB

Would you turn down a 5th and potentially more for those few opportunities though, especially when he’s most likely leaving next year without a guaranteed comp in return

yes i would turn down a 5th for averett - he's more useful to us this year than a 5th rounder and we're not short of picks in next year's draft already...

Positional thoughts now that I have some time...

QB: Mixed bag here. McSorley didn't look great but also didn't have many opportunities with the OL in front of him. Huntley looked better by the eye test but is obviously a lot more risky and still has some major mechanical issues... that wind up is still far too long. Will be curious to see if they swap the two next week and have Huntley go first. Nothing really unexpected here. Huntley has a lot more potential for boom but also a lot more potential for mistakes.

RB: Can't say too much here. Williams put out a nice showing, albeit against players of the same caliber. Just not a lot of room to run behind that OL.

FB: Hard to see where Mason fits. Made a nice ST tackle but not seeing any possible role for him on offense.

WR: Guys did what they could with the opportunities they got. Nothing glaring here but none of them had chances to really make an impact.

TE: Similar thoughts to WR here... but it's clear they are giving Oliver every chance to win the TE3 job. He got a lot of playing time and didn't have much competition.

OL: Good lord. Nothing much to write home about here. Mekari looked to be the most competent of the T options, which could bode well for Colon's chances as a backup C. Was interesting to see Powers out at RT although the results weren't pretty. Andre Smith and Michael Schofield might have been the 2 worst players on the field last night... absolutely dreadful. Interior OL didn't do too well at all either. Ben Cleveland might have vaulted himself up the list of options simply by not playing last night.

DL: A few runs got up the gap but feel like the young guys did solid here. Nothing spectacular but nothing overly glaring either.

OLB: The young guys showed well for the most part. A little leaky on holding the edge (primarily Adeoye). Oweh and Hayes both flashed. Ferguson actually turned in a really solid game.

ILB: Queen looks a lot more comfortable out there and Harrison did too, although he was to a lesser extent. Another position where the rest of the guys did as expected... nothing good and nothing bad.

CB: All of the DBs looked pretty damn good. The starters were clearly just getting their feet wet. Westry got some early run and did well turning at the last second for the PBU that led to Geno's 2nd INT. Wade put up a good showing as well.

S: Stephens is still my standout player. He was by no means perfect but you can see how much potential is there, in both his own ability and in his usage. Really looking forward to seeing how he develops. Geno Stone pulled in 2 INTs. He's not the most athletically gifted but is a high IQ player and put himself in the right spot. Washington didn't get in the game until late but showed some of the things that make people like him so much. Played some slot as well.

ST: Koch is still really good. Verity is putting some good film out there for a future job. Also noticed Geno Stone out there on the first unit so that bodes well for him.

Overall, the offense was stymied by a terrible OL. The offensive skill positions had basically no opportunities out there. The defense did exactly as expected and is a big reason why we have this incredible preseason run year after year.

the more i watch the more im not as panicky about the OL - some guys made some mistakes but moreso the pressure etc. was coming from guys who are unlikely to get anywhere near the 53 man roster

of those who are likely to make the roster Ben Powers was the one I'd be concerned about

a mixed bag of notes for Tyre (some good and some bad) but he was appreciably better at LG than LT (albeit he faced a much higher level of competition at LT than he did at LG)

Beyond just the 53, it'll be interesting to see how the PS is constructed this year, at least off the bat. We have some positions that have prime PS candidates and some that have none.

Young guys likely vying for a spot there:
QB Bahar (with McSorley's injury), RB Williams, RB McCrary, TE Wolf, TE Poljan, WR Cain, WR Moore, WR Victor, OL Ealy, OL Sarell, DL Crawford, DL Swann, ILB Welch, CB Westry, CB Dorsey, DB Warrior, S Stone, S Washington

And we can still keep up to 6 vets and these guys are probably on the edge:
TE Tomlinson, OLB Smith, S Richards

With the names on the roster, we'd have virtually no one at iOL or OLB on the PS unless they want to go the vet route there. Almost an overabundance of options at WR and DB so not all of those guys are going to end up on the PS.

Coming from a guy that used to think averret was asssss coming out, id also turn it down lol. If hump or peters were to get injured… i wouldnt trust wade nor westry.

I thought Averett was a 3rd round pick coming out of 'bama and feel he has turned into a dependable player who has improved every year. I could also see him starting on most teams in the league.

I agree with both you and @rossihunter2 that I wouldn't take the 5th rounder for this year as he's much more useful to have him on the roster this year.

Just for references btw… trying to grow my hair out, should I go for the pink ends that Averett uses?
