The 2021 Offseason Thread

For people thinking Villanueva was going to be some upgrade, the entire OL was supposed to be what eased you. There was always the possibility of a "slow" start, but if they are healthy by midseason the team should be fine. Remember the starting line still hasn't played together yet. Aw shit...
He sucked with steelers also so i just assume he will suck for us.. idk whats mitchell schawrtz deal but we need to take a look at him…. Shit he got a back injury nvm

If we’re adding any OL quality talent, we are either staring at training camp cuts (which can you really get truly quality players on the OL from that?), or a trade

I'm really concerned about the offensive line, particularly early on in the season.

Valid concern. I just don’t know what to do about it except play the hoping game of them getting back to being full health again

The ravens have 21 inactives today. There are only like 2 or maybe 3 that are vet days. That's almost 25% of the team is injured. Does anyone else think that's a little strange? Seems a little unusual to me. The other thing is that of those 21 missing, it's almost exclusively offensive players. That also seems a bit strange to me. A bunch have been non contact injuries as well.

Does anyone know anything about sports science? Are there reasons we could potentially be accidentally doing this to our players? Are there things Saunders could be doing to reduce the quantity of injuries?

It’s well known that Harbaugh runs a pretty intense training camp. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of this stems from that

i count at least 8+ who are likely on vet days... probably more if you include guys who probably only have slight discomforts (like oweh) who are maybe being rested

also the 21 is not almost exclusively offensive players - it's almost exactly half and half 10 and 11...

Saunders has done a pretty good job with injuries over the past couple years and I'm not one to blame Harbaugh on injuries, especially non contact injuries. Training camps in the 70s and 80s were a lot more intense than they are now. Even the 90s with all the two a days.

Good catch thank you. I totally looked at the wrong thing. Here is the list.

Ravens not practicing this morning: WR Bateman, WR Watkins, OLB Oweh, CB Peters, DT Williams, DT Wolfe, FB Ricard, OT Villanueva, DB Levine, CB Dorsey, CB Marshall, OL Mekari, ILB Alaka, WR Cain, G Zeitler, WR M. Brown, CB J. Smith, WR Boykin, DB N. Warrior, TE N. Boyle, OT James

Likely Vet Day: Watkins, Peters, Williams, Wolfe, Ricard, AV, Levine, Mekari

Prior injuries: Boyle and James

Real injuries: Bateman, Oweh, Dorsey, Marshall, Alaka, Cain, Zeitler, Brown, Smith, Warrior, Boykin.

to be even clearer these are the guys i think are being rested, on a vet day or being given a recovery day:

oweh
peters
ricard
watkins
wolfe
williams
villanueva
mekari
alaka
levine

boyle and james are on PUP anyway so wouldnt have been practicing at all - they're not camp injuries

marshall's also coming back from an injury sustained last year

so it's really:
brown
bateman
boykin
dorsey
cain
smith
warrior
zeitler

we already know that brown's basically about ready to be practicing again because he's been doing full sprints on his own while practice has been going on
we know that jimmy's out for a couple of weeks
we know that zeitler's likely ready for week 1

we dont know how severe bateman's injury is yet for sure (but suspected week-to-week and might miss the start of the season)
we dont know how bad dorsey's injury is who also got injured yesterday but isnt making the team anyway
cain's missed a few practices but isnt making the team anyway
boykin's got a hamstring but let's be honest isn't making the team anyway at this point
we've still not been told how bad warrior's injury is but given he was being played out of position it would suggest he's not in the team's plans at safety

there's only 1 absence there that worries me then... and it's bateman...

Yeah thanks for doing that. I just replied to you with a similar analysis. I very much saw something incorrectly at first. Also agreed that our worst injuries seem to be Bateman and maybe Zeitler. That's not too bad.

Cleveland and Hayes reportedly left early today too lol

think it's just the dog days of camp and probably no coincidence that it's on the hottest practice of the year too so far...

we'll know more when we see who plays and who doesn't this saturday

at least with zeitler we know that he's probably gonna be fine for week 1
it's really only bateman that im worried about missing time right now and that's mostly because we've not had it confirmed yet one way or the other what's wrong with him

At the rate things are going, it may be easier to just list the players who are actually practicing instead

Yeah and while apparently there is nothing structural, the soft tissue injuries are sometimes sneakily bad because the player starts to feel better and they think they can go, but that ends up getting them injured again. We gotta take it slow with him, he's really important to the team.

that's why i have no issues with what they're doing with hollywood who's basically practicing already but technically isnt - taking it really slow with those hamstrings

and harbs just said it'll be weeks but not months with bateman which suggests we're looking at grade 2 groin strain territory which is normally something like 3-6 weeks recovery which would put him probably in line to be ready to go a couple of weeks into the season (they wont send him straight back out im pretty sure without some practices under his belt first)
