The WR Thread

His frame isn't tiny, he's a pretty stout 5'11" wr, and he plays incredibly explosive, not sure where the size and speed talk is coming from. And I'd say his route running and above all things his ability to attack the everloving fuck out of the ball when he's catching it, pretty much means he's gonna be able to do the same at any level.

Size and top speed means nothing when you get quick and consistent separation through elite routes and quickness.
I'm kind of wary with Miller. I feel like once he'll see corners that are bigger than him he won't be able to attack the ball as everyone suggests he does.

Man I love Miller so so so much. When you worry about him against bigger defenders are you talking more about getting off the ball or in the air? To me, when you look at his body I think he looks bigger than Kirk and Ridley. He looks like an upsidedown triangle lol. I think we would start him off in the slot where he can be schemed open and take advantage of the smaller cbs. If you put a bigger tougher guy on him, I think his footwork could present a problem for most of those guys (along with how quick he is, and how good his routes are) . I can agree where it'll be harder to make catches like his fades in the NFL, but his possible impact in the intermediate game should not be understated. It also seems he is incredible at tracking the ball. I think it is crazy to compare him to AB overall, but when I watch him running in the open field and tracking deep balls, my mind assumes a #84. When I watch Sutton, I don't see anything but a college receiver. Kirk has a ceiling of Jarvis Landry and a floor of like Cole Beasly. I think he will be good, just not the spark this offense needs. Not even going to speak on Ridley, there is no chance he is there when we pick. When I watch Miller I just see a future star. Small school, massive production, hard worker, great route runner, slightly undersized and an underdog, he could easily be our playmaker.

I mean there are big corners in college too and that's not a skillset that suddenly disappears lol.

I feel like people are purposely downplaying miller for some reason. Everything I've seen so far is "he does this well, but maybe he won't do it so well in the NFL?"

People were REALLY big on Tyler Lockett and sterling shepard on these boards, and Miller is 3x the prospect either of them were and looks far more capable of making the NFL leap due to just playing so much bigger than his frame, something Lockett and Shepard didn't have going for them. Miller is more in the mold of a Steve smith/brandin cooks/AB than those more pure slot guys.

Legit my only concern at all with Miller is he will be considered too much of a reach for us in the first, and won't be there in the second. I would only not mind trading down if we got him and a decent pick, maybe 6 spots for at least a third.

@JoeyFlex5 @purplepittabread88 (not gonna quote two big ass post)

TBH I'm biased. I can understand why Miller is a favourite here and even why people give him a 1st round grade. But basically that's my issue with him, it's that I tend to be really wary when people start overhyping a prospect. You guys make it sound like he's Conan the Barbarian or something and it just makes me pause a lot. It should get me excited but it does just the opposite. We've been like that with guys like Noah Spence or Laquon Treadwell (not everyone has, I know, you get the point) and I know we want to trust our evaluation more than the media guys, but there are some genuinely good analysts out there and when people on the board start overselling prospects I'm just going to have a counter reaction.

About Miller, I like him. I really do. But I don't see a perfect prospect. I need to watch more with him but he looks like he's getting a lot of free releases, he's schemed open a lot, he drops more than people want to admit and while he's feisty it's not the end all be all and people can still tackle him. Plus, like I said, once he get the Ramseys or Jimmy Smiths of the world, how is he going to be able to play the ball in the air? Because he won't separate from those guys and they have a clear advantage in length.

The good news is a good part of the unknown will be answered at the Senior Bowl where he'll face some better CB play.

@Jacquouille Yea all of what you said makes complete since I can't really argue with it. I do have to agree most of his first year we will have to scheme him open. I know the way to beat Jimmy Smith and I don't know how no one in the league has figured it out yet. It's honestly so simple. Just request the league to play the Ravens in the second half of the season lol. I don't really know anyone who can beat Ramsey rn that guy is insane. I do think his routes will give him a slight advantage to make contested catches, I think he can succeed on the inside still against those guys, just with hitches drags screens ect, I agree his fades will be canceled out.

To disagree with you, I don't think the media and scouts are the best indications of a player. They constantly fall in love with big bodied fast guys, but it seems those guys rarely actually work. You have guys like Hunt, Kamara, JUJU all slip through the cracks because of competition, size, and 40 times (respective to each). If they produce on the field, that is my best indication tbh.

To agree with you, the senior bowl will tell a lot. Also, such a big deal has been made about Ridley's age. Turns out this guy is two months older than Calvin. Just found that out. Certainly not a positive.

Are you really hating on him because you don’t think he would do well against Jalen Ramsey and Jimmy Smith...? Uhhhh what.. no one can. There’s a reason they are two of the best CB in the league. They shut down WRs. Also, Julio Jones was tied for 2nd in league in drops. Some people might not want to admit it, but all WR are gonna drop passes every once in a while. As long as it’s not 2 or 3 drops a game or something crazy I don’t care. But I definitely see where you’re coming from about being skeptical since most on here are really hyping him up. I often feel the same way.

The only real thing I see people hating on Miller is his size. “He’s not gonna be able to take the hits in the NFL” and stuff like that. I don’t really see that. And it looks like he’s gonna be a guy that can get separation against anyone in the league. I think he will be a good receiver. Highly doubt we draft him though.

All I'm saying is that there are elite WRs who are undersized, they do it through quickness and smart route running, and I have seen zero indication that Miller falls short in those categories, and those are the traits we desperately need in a wr after so many years of failed experiments with big and fast guys.

You got me on the treadwell bit, but he was a different story, it was his size and big bodied playing style that had us all hyped, it was about potential, miller has a style that translates well, a skillset that allows you to produce against any level of competition, if your game is all boxing out and highpointing without separation then NFL corners are gonna make your life miserable unless you're mike Evans or anwuan boldin, gaining separation consistently is different, he'll get open, and so his size won't affect him much.

I just don't see how AB can be the best wr in the league and people are gonna downplay Miller because they think his size will be a problem. I mean what's the difference in their game? Sure AB is a veteran and so he's more refined, but Miller is an ultimate competitor and anywhere he can improve, he will, and I don't see a reason to believe he can't be about 3/4 of what AB is. I see more Steve smith in Miller than AB but you get what I'm saying.

Yeah I cherry picked Ramsey and Smith because both combine athleticism and size and can press at a high level. You could dig into the lower tier and still find corners that fit the bill (Trumaine Johnson, Marlon, any of the Bengals corners, Trufant, etc...)

And I've seen Miller drop 3 or so easy short passes in some games. The one against Houston comes to mind.

so a little plot twist on the anthony miller train and its not a fun one:

"UPDATE: Senior Bowl rosters will be released this afternoon. A few recent scratches and names who will NOT be on those rosters: WR Anthony Miller DT Maurice Hurst LB Rashaan Evans CB Anthony Averett QB Mason Rudolph"

and then tony pauline weighed in with this: "Anthony Miller has medical red flags that I expect will be announced as we get closer to the combine..."
and Dane Brugler specified "Yep, I've heard the same concerns, specifically his foot."

this is concerning from a health standpoint - it could mean that he drops to our 2nd rounder if he can be touched

This sucks, wanted to see all those guys. Miller and Rudolph in particular would have been really interesting to see.

This could be a blessing for us people on the miller hype train. No way were we going to draft him at pick 16. But now he has a chance to fall to us in the second round. Hope Ozzie learned from the Myles Jack thing last year.

.........or a curse given our "luck" with injuries.

Michael Gallup has really grown on me. Fun player to watch...sneaky fast, diverse in his routes...good hands and very good after the catch.

Anyone know about this guy Daurice Fountain? I haven't been able to find a lot on him. Is the sudden hype well deserved?
