2026 Offseason Thread

He also specifically talked about how not every play is gonna be a home run and you have to use 4-6 yard structured plays to set up explosive plays later

and talking about the fact that the first part of the play (i.e. the designed part of the play) hasn't been working as well as it could even if the 2nd part of the play has been borderline unstoppable

and talking about getting with lamar and discussing how he's been coached (in terms of play designs and what he's been coached to look for) to try and figure out how to win within the scheme while also having lamar's ability to still win on the 2nd phase of the play as an "eraser" for when the play's not perfect

You'd assume Minter and Macdonald defenses are complex, but almost every time I hear them describing it, they seem to make it a point to detail its simplicity.

it's simple and complex in the best way possible

simple for the defence to learn and understand (and importantly the playcalls simplify the defence so they're easy and quick to communicate and adjust in-game on the fly
complex for the offence - creating lots of different looks and disguises and pressures without having to install each one individually

it's called the modular defence and part of the reason it's difficult to install is that it requires a complete mastery from the coach to put the whole together cohesively - all it takes is not understanding how 1 thing fits and then the whole thing falls apart

and as simba and others have said:
the benefit to the players is that the whole defence is taught to everyone so that 1) they all understand the principles and points of every play and 2) based on alignment anyone can play any role within the defence on a given play (within reason) but that's what allows the defence to have such effective disguised sim pressure looks because the pressure is based on alignment rather than role and is separate to the rest of the defensive call rather than being interlinked

Like the way Declan answered the question about optional practices. Said if players want to win championships they should be there at every opportunity.

Declan Doyle sets expectations for Ravens’ OTA attendance: ‘We would expect them to be here’

Lamar Jackson is, once again, at the center of the Ravens’ offseason.
His evolution as a quarterback and team leader informed the front office’s search for its next head coach. His contract status will dictate general manager Eric DeCosta’s flexibility in free agency. And his participation in offseason workouts looms over the offense’s rebuild.
Now Jackson has a new coach in Jesse Minter. Over the next month, he’ll likely get a new contract, either through an extension or a salary-cap-friendly restructure. And over the offseason, he’ll have a new offense to learn and lead.

Jackson’s practice plans could be instructive at an inflection point in franchise history. He has not always taken part in organized team activities, exercising his collectively bargained right to skip some offseason workouts before reporting for mandatory minicamp in June. But on Wednesday, first-year offensive coordinator Declan Doyle made clear his expectations for player attendance.
“We would expect them to be here, and certainly it is voluntary,” Doyle said at an introductory news conference, sitting alongside Minter, defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and special teams coordinator Anthony Levine Sr. “But if you want to say that you’re going to win a championship, if you want to say that you have championship standards and those are your goals and your expectations, certainly, that’s going to take work. That’s going to take collaboration. That’s going to take the beginning of building the relationship with their coaches, other players, starting off this next regime on the right foot.”

Jackson missed the majority of the team’s OTAs in the 2024 and 2025 offseasons, forfeiting a combined $1.5 million in bonuses that were included in the five-year, $260 million deal he signed in 2023. Under the terms of the contract, he must attend 80% of the Ravens’ offseason workouts to earn a bonus each of the next two offseasons.
Other Ravens stars missed OTAs last season, including defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike and safety Kyle Hamilton, but Jackson’s practice habits have come under greater scrutiny since a string of lower-body injuries limited his participation over the second half of last season. He struggled with his accuracy at times, finished with a career-high sack rate (10.7%) and rushed for a career-low 349 yards.
Doyle said the Ravens’ staff is still “in the early stages of really stripping this down to the studs” and rebuilding the offense around their personnel, but he outlined three “nonnegotiable” pillars: physical, detailed and explosive.

Even with the Ravens’ disappointing 2025 season, the team will enter free agency next month as one of the AFC’s Super Bowl favorites. But there’s plenty of heavy lifting ahead. Doyle said he hoped to work with players “hands-on” this offseason and make “improvements so that we set ourselves up where, when we come back in for training camp, we hit the ground running, we already have kind of shared knowledge, shared language, and we’re able to go right to work.”

I can’t speak for Lamar’s contract situation and how that may impact the Ravens in free agency. He could have a career ending injury at any point like any player, and I can’t hate on them to get their bread.

I will say Doyle said all the right things about Lamar having a growth mindset and his willingness to learn. We’ve seen the growth his entire career. Only times I can say he has looked a bit checked out was the last two years with Roman when opposing teams were calling the plays as they happened, and last year when you could see his frustration with the play calling.

I don’t blame players for checking out when all the coaches say at the podium is the players have to execute better, and are okay with complacency with coaching.

So far this staff is saying the right things. It’s time for them to put the words into action. Doyle and Minter are students of the game and are hungry.
I'd put it like this. As a capitalist, I understand all the decisions people make. As a fan who's only interest is entertainment, I don't give a fuck about any of the players problems.

In reality, you're either a simp for a Billionaire, or you're a simp for a millionaire. There's nothing in-between.
I'll always support a fourth round pick who's made $1-2M in career earnings to try to get the biggest bag he can on his first mega contract.
I'll never empathize with the all-world QB bitching even a little bit about $ when they've made $200M in less than 10 years. For any sane, rational person who has even a miniscule amount of money management skills, $200M is multi-generational wealth if he never makes another dime.

Get your first bag. If you want fans to hate you, keep trying to get the biggest bag possible after you got the first one. They'll side with the Billionaires.

So if they dont have any amount of money management skills, they should keep going after the biggest bag possible right? ill never understand how people have a problem with others wanting to get more money than they already have.

No, they should invest in this thing called education and learn $ management skills. If you have no $ management skills, what's the purpose of making more $? If you don't know how to live on $200M, are you just magically going to learn how to at $400M?

I have no problem with people participating in capitalism getting every $ they can. The problem is the NFL isn't capitalism. It's a highly structured socialistic society with a clearly defined, finite pool of $ available to all workers.

And as the consumer of the product, a player getting paid more doesn't benefit me in any way. I'm not guaranteed better output or higher productivity.

plenty of people with education and I'm including high wage earners don't know how to manage their money. Unfortunately that most likely won't solve the issue, but I understand what you are trying to say.

Our whole coaching staff is new.. i want it to happen but its dam near no way this upcoming season
2015 Broncos did it with a new staff.

Seahawks just did it with a new OC.

Our biggest problem was defense and our HC is a specialist. I don't think you understand the impact he's going to have on that side. If the OL is addressed, I'm pretty confident the offense will be fine, even with a first-year playcaller. Lamar has shown me he's capable of stepping up in key moments.

That shit dont matter. Education or not, people still just dont get it. Some learn by trial and error and some dont. Some never learn at all.
