Coaching Carousel 2026

not to be the guy that defends the ownership or the GMs or whatever - because i never want to be that guy
but i think the pipeline is the biggest issue (which itself tbf is definitely affected by racial bias and perception)

everyone wants to hire the young offensive genius - that moniker right now is only ever bestowed on young white guys

and there is a clear structural imbalance in terms of the percentage of defensive coaches who are from a minority vs the percentage of offensive coaches who are from a minority

think the last stat i saw said 27% of defensive coaches are minorities but only 7% of offensive coaches

until that issue is addressed, the HC imbalance will persist
yep, maybe Nate can start changing that perception next offseason.

I think a lot of it goes back to minority offensive players and QB. We’re seeing a lot of minority defensive players because they have a long history but it’s much smaller at QB and other positions on offense. I get in 10 years it’ll be a healthier distribution

We need a Shanahan or Kubiak to have a black baby.

The thing is, lately, when minority coaches have had the opportunity, the vast majority have failed.

I think it's just a cycle.

We need to implement a Rooney Rule so that every team has at least one white wide receiver and one white cornerback.
We just need to be better and get rid of the Rooney Rule. It was helpful back in the day, but now it's just stupid.

White wrs are easy to come by. Now white cbs, thats super tough. Rarely even see any of them in highschool or lil leagues. I can see it changing soon though.

Don't worry. When black OCs become a thing my guess is it will unexpectedly change back to defensive minded coaches...
I dnt think so tbh. In like 10-20yrs them kind of people will be basically be out of here. Once the millennials start getting in charge, i can really see a lot of change happening tbh. I mean its gonna forever be there but i can see a drastic change possibly happening

A lot of people take early coaching internships when they realise they're not good enough to play and large majority of them are white. People from other disciplines, as well, which I guess is another pipeline of predominantly white folk.

unfortunately when Gen Z takes over we will be playing flag football

Yeah there was a huge study on this back in the day. Both from a talent and socioeconomic (or lack thereof) standpoint, black athletes tend to hang onto the dream a bit longer. The white athletes generally have the financial ability to cut bait on their playing careers and transition into coaching ranks earlier. It was really interesting, but I haven't been able to find that in years.
