No one has any idea who'll make a good head coach beforehand anyway, so this has as much chance of working out as Ben Johnson does, but it seems strange to promote an OC who hasn't really C'd a good O in years and years.

Its not that weird of an argument if you're Dallas. All of Dallas' attention should be on getting people to stop caring about them. He's just as likely to succeed or fail as just about anybody else they could have hired.

Also would point out that, with Brian as OC, the Cowboys had an elite offense in 2023. Led the league in scoring, top 3 in passing yards, and still middle of the pack in rushing on a team without a lot of talent at RB.

And they were at least average last year with a backup QB for half the year and no running game.

Jerruh never wants people to stop caring about Dallas. He wants attention more than he wants to win, judging by every action he has taken in the past 30 years. I agree that he should want people to look away from the mess. I think he's a terrible owner, propped up by Will McClay's great drafting.

I assumed that was really the McCarthy offense - he called it, didn't he? - and Shottenheimer was like his Matt Nagy.

I think in this case, if he actually wanted more attention, he'd have just hired Deion, which is what every moron in America wanted. Couldn't have been about $.
He's 100% a terrible Owner. But terrible Owners just hire the sexiest candidate they can find to stay relevant. This actually smells a lot less like desperation and a lot more like a guy who thinks he has the core in place to win.

He leaked Deion news during a playoff game for attention. If Deoin had actually wanted to go there, I'm sure he would have hired him.

I was pleasantly surprised by McCarthy in Dallas relative to expectations. Turns out that stitled late period Green Bay offense was down to Rodgers refusing to do anything other than his usual few plays. He even did alright with Rush, as you said.

I agree about the running game. All those WCO-type coaches pass too much. They were a bad running team anyway, but was some of that down to Jerruh's insistence that they use Elliott? They looked a bit better when Dowdle got the carries.

No matter who hired, people would have a problem with it
 
Mike McCarthy is sitting out 2025 and will wait for a job in 2026. He did interview with the Saints, so it seems nobody wants the Saints head coaching job.

 
May have to do with the management over in New Orleans is the reason why or much more than that.

yes, they hadd a top 3 offense in passing yards, but lets quantify this a bit. They didn't beat many good teams and had a pretty cake schedule. Sure you play who is on your schedule, but I'm pretty sure many offensive coordinators could have designed an offense that had CeeDee Lamb as the WR. Most likely would have been a better team as well.

I agree. I was just pointing out the suggestion that Dallas hasn't had a good offense in many years. They've had a pretty strong offense for several years now. They just don't beat good teams and are seemingly one-dimensional.

I think that franchise is just delaying being in shambles. Like they're already not good, but their cap strategy makes Philadelphia look ultra conservative. These guys perpetually defer. That's not necessarily a bad strategy, but they don't have a franchise QB, don't seemingly have a mechanism to get one at the moment, and they're going to have to rip the band aid off their bleeding cap management strategy at some point soon..

I've actually talked to some friends down in Louisiana, and their "theory" is that basically the Saints can't afford to suck. That franchise was so putrid for so long before Brees and Katrina that they think the fanbase will simply stop supporting them if they suck for an extended period of time. Which might be what's best long term.

In any event, while I think Ownership is willing to spend $ to be relevant down there, that's a roster I would want no part of if I were a HC candidate. They got turned down or had other choices by several of the top candidates, and I think they'll get left with an OC/DC of a team who had far less interview interest. Ultimately, somebody is taking that job, because there's only 32 of them. But its not a sexy job at all.

I think they would be best to get rid of the GM and just go through a complete rebuild, but it sounds like you are in complete agreement. I don't think anyone on this board will disagree.

Its interesting. I actually don't think he's a bad GM. But I guess it depends on how you evaluate them. I actually think his cap management is precisely what you want if you're a fan of the team, and I think they generally are probably above league average in terms of drafting players. It's one of the few franchises where I think it just literally comes down to QB play as to what's holding them back. I just think the roster blowup should happen in order to suck bad enough that they can get like a top 3 pick. They're never that bad.

that is very true and they started off well in the first couple games, then injuries took hold and they fell off. I still think that 2017 draft class is keeping him above water. I'm not so sure they have been that great lately, but I agree they just don't suck enough.

and also just take a fallow year and swallow a bunch of dead cap too
the cap gymnastics are great but it also means they're basically operating as if they've got a super expensive QB taking up a bunch of cap space rather than a team that's actually really cheap yet somehow has no space to add talent

if they're worried about apathy, they've probably already got to that point tbh because the fans arent stupid - they know that their team is in hell from a cap and QB standpoint
