Man I’m just tryna get my first tank safe for now lol. I tested the water last night and it’s hard to tell if the ammonia is going down or not, the color of the tube is kinda in between. Looks like nitrate just started showing up last night too so I feel like there’s some progress

That sounds like a good sign. There's a fine line in balancing water changes while trying to get the beneficial bacteria to grow. If you feel up to it, you can add some live plants to help with the cycle. Java ferns, Java moss, and anubias are easy, low light plants that don't need substrate to grow in.

I’m gonna add those soon, but for now I’m trying to see the ammonia level out from the bacteria and don’t wanna add plants to process the existing ammonia

That works too. Plants should work with your bacteria instead of outcompeting them (the ones I mentioned don't grow very fast). They'll bring in some extra bacteria and will give you some room for error while cycling.

Okay maybe I should just toss some in then. Also thinking about going to house of Tropicals and seeing if they sell used filters

Went to house of tropicals in Glen Burnie, this place fkn rules. I bought a used filter straight out of their axolotl tank, caked in algae and the bag was loaded down with probably a liter of water from the tank. Then I bought an anubias plant already growing on driftwood, which is perfect because it’s low light and doesn’t need soil, the exact plant I needed.

Natural shit looks SOOO much better than artificial, night and day difference just in how it looks. Hopefully this tank cycle gets really kickstarted now. He’s up to 4+ inches now and at this rate he’s gonna outgrow the tub I’m using for him in about 2 weeks

That's great! I get most of my stuff online, but I've wanted to go there for a long time. All of that stuff should go a long way in speeding up your cycle.
 
After a lot of self educating and stressing, I finally got my axolotl tank cycled and healthy. I refused to pay for an aquarium stand and wasn’t gonna risk particle wood furniture getting wet and failing, so I DIY’d it. And finally Squirtle has a home!
