im actually outraged that the bbc has no coverage of Gita in the UK at all - most other outlets have picked it up in some way or another but our so called national broadcaster hasnt even mentioned the cyclone once ever in any article at all

Looks like Tonga got hit pretty bad but only 1 indirect death so far

Tropical Cyclone/Hurricane/Typhoon thoughts on year so far and last year's activity.

Southern Hemisphere as a whole having a below average year in cyclone activity although both are already more active in terms of ACE(Accumulated Cyclone Energy) than the previous year which was very low for the south Indian and south Pacific basins. Only basin last year globally that was active was the Atlantic where things went pretty crazy after a quiet few years due to El Nino. So busy in fact we just got the National Hurricane Center full report on Irma fairly recently and are still waiting on the report on Maria. 3 Major hurricanes impacting land at the rate we saw last year was pretty crazy.

There is some more activity coming in the southern hemisphere. Models showing Cyclone Marcus could grow into an intense one and may give Gita a run for the most intense of the year so far. Currently scraping the north coast of Australia as a modest tropical storm but will go into open waters over the next few days and is projected to strengthen there. Madagascar is also getting hit with a strong tropical storm.

Extremely crazy about those hurricanes since I believe the last cat 3 hit in 2006 then we had a cat 3,4 and 5 in 1 yr.

Last cat 3 was Wilma in 2005 but that was a crazy year indeed with Katrina, Rita, and Dennis all also being U.S. major hurricane landfalls.
 
First cat 5 on Saffir Simpson hurricane scale(has been cat 5 equivalent on Australian scale for a bit now) worldwide since Maria.

Yeah it did hit cat 5 on the Australian scale which measures 10 minute sustained wind speeds. Saffir Simpson scale is the one used by the U.S. and Joint Typhoon Warning Center(JTWC) which measures 1 minute sustained winds which for Gita maxed out at about 145mph. Cat 5 threshold for the Saffir Simpson scale is 156 mph with Marcus hitting around 160 mph right now. Could still end up intensifying further
 
Oman got hit with a category 3 equivalent hurricane last night, rare event for the area and impacts are sure to be bad.

In addition there is now Alberto in the gulf which should hit the gulf coast as a moderate Tropical or Subtropical storm. Lots of rain coming for Florida with this one.
