The Well-Mannered Politics Thread

American politics are about rhetoric and showmanship, not reality. Cause and effect doesn't matter here. Policy implications don't matter here. But goddammit that Trump is so star spangled awesome I don't even care /s

What does patriotism look like in NZ? Is it borderline jingoism like it is here?
Yeah, I said earlier that his skinny budgets were just for show - looking like he was doing something or looking like he was trying to do something, but with very little actually changing or with proposed changes so absurd they had no chance of getting through congress. I get that empty showmanship is standard fare in politics (and that Trump is a brilliant media/TV guy) but this stuff's just on another level.

Patriotism here seems to be about watching the All Blacks, complaining about dairy prices when local consumers get charged world prices (shock horror) and getting way too excited whenever Lorde opens her mouth. Kinda cringy stuff but not nearly as regimented, custom-heavy or unquestionable as it is over there. I legitimately think NZ is the best country in the world (impartial opinion.....) but it wouldn't bother me if someone burnt a flag or refused to stand or put their hand over their heart for a rendition of the national anthem or anything. Those things always seemed like obligatory gestures to me and I've always hated pretending stuff like that is sincere.

Please, anyone, for the love of all that is good, do not watch this movie.

I'm sure it really mentions that the Democratic party used to be the party of the south during the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. I'm sure it mentions that the last political shift was during FDR's campaigning as he campaigned as a Dem-Socialist for the lower class. I'm sure it mentions that Nixon was the president that targeted southern, rural farmers and the likes and helped shape the target demographics that we see today in our campaigns.

Please, do not watch this movie.

Debunk the facts Bird. Have you ever watched it?

This post just provided me the motivation to see this movie.

:D

I am not making a claim either way, but in this day and age, that list can easily be falsified.
I hope it is not, and truth be known, it likely is all legit, but possibilities exist.

That would be a HUUUUUUUUGGGEEEE low if Kaepernick or anyone associated with Kaepernick falsified this info. I'm sure if someone tried to, you would think that it'd make the news, but then again, who knows.

Do people really think that the kneeling is a protest against the military or are Facebook commenters dumber than a rock?

It is appalling to me that people are more angry that people peacefully took a knee than they were about white supremacists marching at a major university.

Just wondering......what makes you say people are more angry......?

More people being angry makes me say that more people are angry. From browsing Facebook and Twitter, reading and watching the news, and talking to friends and family, it's abundantly clear to me that people are more upset about taking a knee than white supremacists marching in Virginia. Maybe I reside in a pocket of the state that's particularly jingoist, but it doesn't seem to me that that's the case. I just don't remember this much outrage over Charlottesville.

It's likely because politics has -- again -- invaded our cultural institutions, and people don't like discomfort. People don't like their happy place being made unhappy. I guess I've answered my question, but I think the point stands.

wow, really? That's certainly not the case in my area or at my workplace.

At my workplace, it's far from the case. People at my workplace are fairly supportive of the players and were quite vocal during Charlottesville.

But... living in northeastern Maryland, where black folks account for a pretty small percentage of the population, probably explains the difference. Not a lot of diversity out here, nor are there diverse viewpoints.

Gotcha. Frederick county?

I don't know who dale hansen is but he said a lot of things in a pretty clear, concise and precise way in this clip that I mostly agree with
