The Well-Mannered Politics Thread

The fact that people make this protest out to be about the troops....first MLB player to knee yesterday after those comments, his father is in the military. Enough of the "disrespect to the troops" narrative, that is a bold face lie. I live with a 9 year veteran, he too doesn't see how you can call it disrespect to him or his friends that died while on duty. That is exactly what they died for, the right to protest etc.

My honest opinion, keep politics out of football. Plain and simple. I don't pay to watch a game or pay for merchandise to listen or see what a players political stance is. I pay to watch a freaking game. If you want to make a statement, there are plenty of other ways. Its just like Hollywood. I don't watch a actors movie to see what his political stance is, I watch a movie because I find the movie entertaining; but these actors want to turn a awards show into a political crap fest/ slaughter. If people want to talk about their views/ motives, that's fine, but all that's going on right now is turning people off, including myself.

To go back on what I said earlier about the hypocrisy of the NFL Owners. I find it so odd that BEFORE Trump said anything about this, the owners had to think really hard about signing Kaepernick and they all decided to not sign him due to the distractions that this brought. All of a sudden Trump comes out and blasts the players, and all these statements are being made in support of what they were shying away from in the offseason.

I said it in the Kaep thread, the real reason the owners didn't sign him was because they didn't want the distractions that came with it. Now they are welcoming it by making these statements. You can't just flip your stance all because Trump said something. I know it's the cool thing to do to hate on Trump but to flip your stance to say hey we support kneeling just to join the bandwagon of hating on Trump is ridiculous.

If they want to make a stance, then why not sign Colin???? If they are truly ok with this and welcome the distractions that come with it, I challenge one of these owners to sign Kaep before Week 4. Words are words, actions mean everything. In which to the players, what does kneeling do anyway? Why not actually go out and do something to improve the situation and the cause you believe in? Kneeling is just going down on one knee with no real action.

The reason you see it in games is because everybody is watching. The NBA has embraced this, their numbers have gone up with no issues. Lebron during his tenure in Miami had all the players wear hoodies to make a statement. We will not and SHOULD not stand for injustice. We as Americans owe it to each other to continue pushing the narrative forward.

What made Ali greater than the fighters in his era (you can make a case for other boxers being better) was the fact that he openly stood up against how unequal things were.

Fast forward a couple years, Roberto Clemente used his platform to forward the progress for ALL Americans.

I know under no circumstance do you agree with police brutality, what is being asked here is for said officers to be dealt with accordingly. We have too many Americans in jails throughout the country in jail for MUCH less.

You don't think these issues have been brought up before? The problem is the people that we need to listen (like yourself) will never check those outlets, the dialogue will never be had if that is the case. Peacefully bring the issue to the forefront.

Sometimes people do not realize their error in judgment, Colin stood on a loan island last year. This year, more and more players both in and outside the NFL are catching on and uniting. It is better late than never.

I do agree that I think owners are waking up to how much this means to players but again I want to see him on a week 4 roster if they really want to make a statement.

Also, Patriots fans BOOED their own players kneeling during the anthem. Fans even yelled "Stand Up" toward the players as well, in which I'm pretty sure shouting, talking, booing of any kind during the anthem is more disrespectful than players taking a knee.

The issues have been going on for far longer that when slavery started. Inequality has been going on for centuries, far back into the middle ages, far far back in A.D./B.C. times. While its no excuse, there will always be inequality, it will never be completely stopped. I don't need the NFL to hear about these issues, we've been hearing about these issues far before players in the NFL even started protesting, and I can guarantee you that the majority of the USA has heard about these issues without needing to watch NFL games. Look at our news feed for the past year. Its been littered with stories on these issues. I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree that we need NFL players to protest to bring these issues to the forefront. We've had protests in the news regularly, your telling me that's not enough? I don't agree with police brutality, what I also don't agree with is the "pig" stance a lot of these players and people seem to have adopted where they think all cops are racist and horrible people. There are good and bad cops, just like there are good and bad people in every race. To me its disrespectful and disgusting. I know sometimes its hard to have respect for law enforcement due to all the bad cops out there, but there are many cops that have done amazing things, that people still talk negatively about. As for checking outlets, I'm subscribed to news stations on twitter, so I consistently see news on these issues.

Again, I agree to an extent as to why kneeling may be seen as a sign of disrespect. Now, let's address why they are kneeling.....nobody seems to care about that.

Well yeah all owners are greedy agenda pleasing dirtbags pretty much, but lets be real for a second. Colin kap is not a good QB. He might be a decent backup but for his price tag? No one is gonna pay that cap hit for a 2nd string QB.

So you know your history, and yet we as a collective should accept things for what they are because it just is what it is. Sir, just sit in the back and let the rest of us who do want a change for the better, for EVERYONE work. Sorry that these issues seem to annoy you, but when we have a country that is currently ranked 26th in the world in education and we lead the world in mass incarceration I do not accept the "it is what it is" narrative.

The whole if you do not like it leave narrative is also disgusting (not implying you said that). If you are in a marriage and issues pop up in the home do you just leave? Or do you hear each other out and work through whatever issue that may be and make your home better than it was before?

Their are police officers who have gotten away with murder, I will not and can not support any entity that does not correctly address the few. These are men and women sworn in to protect us, ALL OF US, from harm and yet seem to be the very ones committing crimes and over stepping their boundaries.

Thank you for noticing......
I say this as a white male who grew up in a middle class family and faced no racism. I currently live in Williamsburg, a very old, conservative, white city with virtually no crime. I was lucky enough to go to college and have it paid for. I say all of this as someone who is incredibly privileged and recognizes that.

Trump now says standing locked in arms is alright but kneeling is bad.

“Great solidarity for our National Anthem and for our Country,” President Trump said. “Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. Bad ratings!

Someone needs to shut Trump up, every time he opens his mouth he gets himself in trouble. He is openly giving people reasons to criticize him when he opens his mouth. If he were to stay quiet, then while there would still be criticism, it wouldn't be as bad as it is.

It seems that nobody on either side seems to care about context or facts anymore, anything goes at this point, when Trump took his shot at the NFL it opened up a can of worms for the league to fire back.

I mean, Trump called out and said that these players are sons of bitches and said that they should be fired if they kneel. The owners stood up for the rights of the players.

I fail to see the hypocrisy.

I can promise you that my news feed has only gotten increasingly more political since the kneeling started.

Hey everyone, I rarely post in the political thread because I have seen first hand people who were good friends on Facebook that don't have anything to do with each other because of some political posts. I value everyone's friendship and respect everyone's opinion so I don't really want to chance anything with a post. With that said, this has been a very upsetting day for me. During the first part of this game, my mom calls me up crying. She said my dad got up this morning and had all his Ravens gear on, however he saw a bunch of Ravens players kneeling for the Anthem and he got up and went upstairs and was up there for a while and then came downstairs with a box containing all his Ravens gear and told my mom to take it to the Goodwill. He turned off the TV and went outside to do yard work. My mom knows me and my dad talk Ravens football over the game. I had to hear my mom crying and asking if I was also going to get rid of the jersey she special ordered for me as a Christmas present and being upset that I won't be able to call and talk to them on Sundays about Ravens football. I am sure that my dad probably took down the Ravens flag he always has up on game day. My mom knows as I do, when my dad says he is done, he means it. There is no cooling off period with my dad, he means it when he says he is done. I was so upset, I turned off the game and went outside and washed my vehicle. When my wife, came out to see what was wrong I couldn't even tell her. I have a lot of thinking to do. I never thought I would be dealing with today. I can't stand to hear my mom cry.
