The Lamar Jackson, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Walt Coleman

Lol lamar sucks at interviews. Seems like a genuinely great kid, and he’s got a FIRE in him, you can see it in his face when he’s on the field, but goddamn he’s ass with interviews

He’s a shy kid, but will most likely get better at them with time

You arent beating a real defense with that kind of offensive showing. When WRs are basically irrelevant and you can basically sit on run that won't work against real teams. That was the 30th ranked NFL defense and they started much stronger so basically they have been the worst defense in the NFL for the past monthish. I don't wanna take away from a good win, but that won't work against most teams.

Fortunately next up is Oakland and they are a free win so still one more week before the real games start up.
You’re right. That mix isn’t sustainable. But the mix we have with Flacco getting nowhere on the ground and throwing 50+ times a game isn’t working against most teams.

So how do we improve that? By giving Lamar all the reps with the 1s and slowly open the playbook. How do we improve that imbalance with Flacco? We can’t and that’s been proven.

Going with Flacco is stagnation. Going with Jackson is moving forward.

I’m very curious to see what we will look like with this option when there’s tape and on them not the worst defense in nfl history. I liked what I saw a lot today espically from Gus, but I just can’t get completely exited about Lamar yet. He’s young and developing but it really does scary me we haven’t seen him attempt anything deep .. or even mid range for that matter.

I love Collins but gus fits what we do better ngl. Defense looks stout but still act like it’s lacrosse and there’s a crease in the middle you can’t enter

That illegal formation almost cost us- lucky it didn’t

Overall good win but the biggest deciding factor was aj greens toe being a bit hurt lol.. thank god for that. 5-5 and the 6th seed.

Just managed to watch Humph's play and victory formation.
Real happy Lamar got a W on his first start. Sounds like he played fine, although I'd really like little less conservative playbook - then he'll become really dangerous.

Also, finally they had guts to put Edwards in. I keep telling everybody it's not all on the O line - Collins just isn't very good back.

I don't want everyone to flip out like they always do if you say something negative, but I'd like to start a real discussion about Lamar's ability to throw the football. So let me start with the positive. The Bengals had absolutely no answer for our run game. They knew we were going to run almost every play and it did not matter. We gashed them. The one important note here is that although their defense is bad, they still routinely stopped Collins but not Edwards. If LJ8 and Edwards can even recreate about 65% of what they did every week, I think we'd be a formidable rushing team. Now for the negative. First of all, it is clear that the coaching staff who scouted him, drafted him, and has had an entire off-season and 11 weeks with him is scared to call passing plays for him. This is deeply concerning. Second, I understand he's a rookie, but he made the same type of bad decision twice and should've been intercepted twice instead of just once. Third, I'm concerned with him hitting Lewis in the back of the helmet. The reason that happened is because Lamar wants to side arm pass all of the time. He was also really in accurate to Moore and is lucky that did not lead to an interception. We've seen too much of that in the past. Even when he passed traditionally, it doesn't look like a good ball. I'm concerned he is trying to change his form and is still bad at it because he hasn't practiced with it for years like his natural form. Why this is concerning is because the dude takes too many hits. He needs to learn to actually throw accurately so he isn't forced to run so much and he can preserve his body. This is a gut feeling and it's so early that it SHOULD NOT be taken seriously at this point, but I am going to guess that Lamar is only better than Josh Allen from this class.

to quote Zrebiec:
  • Snead started yelling at Mornhinweg as he walked to the sideline. Harbaugh stepped in and said something to Snead. Snead then kept getting after Mornhinweg
  • Lamar Jackson among those calming Snead down. Snead obviously wanted the Ravens to be aggressive and throw o the end zone. Instead, Jackson ran two straight times and Ravens kicked FG. They lead 24-21 with 8:12 left.
you have got to think that if snead is going off on him that the players are pissed off with the playcalling in general for him to get that angry about it - and you can see from that reaction that he obviously thinks the coaches should trust lamar to throw it more

The Good:
  1. Lamar's first start was really promising: he looked calm, composed, mostly read the field well - was late sometimes but made good choices except on the INT (but that was really his only bad throw selection all day), he's electric on the ground and has a nasty ball-fake - he keys on that linebacker so well, ball placement needs to be more consistent but was pretty good, incredible SCRAMBLING ability which created our biggest plays of the day - as he showed in college, he is always looking downfield to pass when scrambling too, his throws looked pretty too but i really want to see us give him a chance to take a deep shot - i want to see him punish defences who creep downhill to key on the run
  2. Gus Edwards: stylistically (and ive been saying it since he got his first 2 carries the week he came off the practice squad) he is the type of runner we need - collins goes ham towards the edge way too much and misses the cut back lane, buck has no real tackle breaking - it's why i think dixon is really still potentially a big part of this offence down the stretch - but gus edwards is making himself uncuttable (which is important given that he was the most obvious guy to be replaced)
  3. Orlando Brown: he got beaten for a sack that i can remember but was incredible in the running game - he must be the incumbent starter even when Hurst comes back and you have to think Alex Lewis might be in trouble to hold onto his starting position - skura the clear weak link on the starting OL but no obvious center replacement we trust (albeit skura still had a wonky snap today anyway)
  4. Willie Snead: awesome over the middle - fighting for extra yards on key 3rd downs
  5. John Brown: he had the long reception but im just gonna give him kudos for key blocks on both our td runs
  6. 3rd down defence: there were some frustrating completions (3rd and 12) but outside of the 3 short fields for all the bengals tds they didnt allow a the bengals offence to do anything (those bengal drive starting positions - CIN-43, BAL-32, BAL-44 - the time off really did the defence and particularly the defensive backs a world of good - they looked faster and fresher in coverage all afternoon - i wonder if part of the problem the last few weeks is that we kept playing teams coming off their own bye and against offences that played fast and maybe the defence was gassed
  7. Chris Moore's catch
The Bad:
  1. Pass Blocking: it was ironically at its best once lamar escaped the pocket but it broke down so much and gave lamar no time inside the pocket
  2. Pass Rush: we brought numbers which created some pressure and we had opportunities to get more than 1 sack but we didnt finish the sack at least twice that i saw - it's frustrating that we still cant get pressure with 4 because it leaves guys like CJ and Peanut (please let Kenny takeover more snaps on coverage please) isolated which is often a mismatch when wide receivers are crossing through a zone - we really miss timmy williams and i hope he comes back healthy and wanting to make a point
  3. Alex Collins, Buck Allen: both of them are making a case for themselves not to be back next year - they're not making people miss or hitting the holes we're creating in the run game - and its telling that buck is losing snaps in pass pro to ty montgomery with only a week or 2 of practices
The Ugly:
  1. The playcalling from both coordinators left a lot to be desired - some disappointing situational decisions and choices - i really think the frustration of the players now is going to be the undoing of marty's job - the players trust lamar to get the ball to them so why dont the coaches? let's get lamar a chance at a deep shot or something beyond 15 yards downfield - and lamar himself said in the post-game presser that he'd like to be throwing the ball more - said he can take the hits his body took but realises its unsustainable and wants to be throwing it more
  2. the officiating crew banging us in big spots over and over - but they let the bengals false start and hold all day - zero consistency from walt coleman and his crew who have made some big errors this year for other teams too

Now for the negative. First of all, it is clear that the coaching staff who scouted him, drafted him, and has had an entire off-season and 11 weeks with him is scared to call passing plays for him. so ill break this down a little - and you'll know this isnt kool-aid because ive been saying this sort of stuff for a while:

  1. i dont know what the coaching staff is doing with his passing - he reads the field well (and read it well today), he makes good decisions and has fixed almost all of the mechanical issues he had, he still has some bad footwork at times but its vastly improved, and you can see his arm strength all over his tape - i dont know why they arent letting him open it up - and its frustrating - and you can tell the players believe lamar can throw too - crabtree and snead both had a go at both harbs and marty about the playcalling
  2. the other int-worthy throw you're talking about was not a bad decision - it was a slightly underthrown ball - but he was trying to put that ball in the only place where his guy could get it on a play where no one else was even remotely open
  3. lamar does not want to side arm the pass all the time - when i broke down the panthers series he had at the end of the game i noticed him side arm a pass too - he's not doing it because its lazy, hes doing it to get it through a lane that otherwise would not be achievable with the normal arm motion - flacco never had to do it because he's a man mountain but you'll see qbs all over the league do it to defeat pressure in their passing lane - the lewis helmet throw was just a fluke that it happened on that side arm delivery
  4. i agree he takes too many hits - he himself basically said it in the post-game presser - it would alleviate the hits he takes if he is allowed to unleash the ball in the passing game more
  5. the running more was not him being forced - it was the ravens repeatedly running the RPO with no passing option built into so many of the plays

you're welcome to your opinions etc. but i disagree with a lot of your concerns after 1 game - a lot of what we saw today is really consistent with what a lot of us have been saying for months about lamar - especially with regards to his throwing mechanics and decision making

Well, Joe wasn't winning against real teams, so...

Also shout-out to Ronnie Stanley who went down 2-3 times, left the game and returned back every time. True warrior and he made a key block for Lamar to help him gaining the edge.

Ravens Lamar Jackson (117) & Gus Edwards 115) each eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark Sunday. Per @EliasSports, today marked the first time in NFL history that a team had a ROOKIE QB & RB each surpass 100 rushing yards in a game.
