The 2023 Offseason Thread

It's pretty hard to blame the players for this one. It's not exactly hard to believe that Harbaugh kept someone incompetent in their job far too long - we've seen it with Marty, Roman, Castillo etc before - we know he has a history of it.
The definition of incompetent is not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully. Or could mean someone unqualified or unfit for something

Up until the Covid situation The Ravens were pretty healthy team. I don't remember Saunders being called a issue in years past and even yourself probably didn't think he was a problem. The strength and conditioning is deeper than just injuries . A team really can't be a competitive team that stays competitive throughout the season if the strength and conditioning coach is incompetent at his job. Players have to stay conditioned throughout the season to prepare for games. Players we have seen make it to the pro bowl , win MVP, and more probably dont make it if the strength and conditioning coach methods is complete trash.

The last time Mary M was The Ravens offensive coordinator The Raven offense I believe was ranked 6th overall and 8th in scoring.

The last time Juan Castillo was The Ravens offensive line coach PFF ranked The Ravens offensive line top 10 in the league and we also saw guys like K.O and Ricky Wagner get paid big bucks by other teams under Castillo tutelage.

In regards to Greg Roman he legit only really had one bad season as The Ravens offensive coordinator which was last year but before then he won assistant of year had The Ravens offense ranked top 10 in scoring in back to back years in 2019 & 2020.That number dropped a bit in 2021 but that was also the year The Raven passing attack was ranked 13th overall and LJ missed the rest of the season.

Overall I'm not sure if these guys were incompetent but maybe they were. I left some links for some of information I came up with. The rest of the information can be easy to find with a quick google search.

Agree and I doubt that such franchise altering moves are done all by the GM himself without consulting at some point.
Exactly. Not saying that it won’t happen, but there’s a lot of decision making beyond just paying Lamar that goes into this. It’s been widely assumed all along that multiple teams will just give him what he wants, but most people in NFL circles are starting to challenge that thought process, and for good reason. Still absolutely could happen but it’s feeling more and more likely that it won’t be a ton of teams battling each other. Maybe a couple

YOu're right, but It's hard to admit that

Yes, because it only takes one.

I speculate it would be Atlanta or Carolina, possibly Washington, but I think they'd be a long shot
The funny thing about that speculation is that both Atlanta and Carolina were in on Watson last year, given a chance to match the fully guaranteed, and declined to do so.

Maybe they are willing to do so with Lamar since a year's gone by and they've accomplished squat, other than trade McCaffrey, the best offensive player of both teams combined

Lots of people at this point saying that the non-exclusive might be the move because they don’t believe teams are going to pay up. Only team I’ve seen mentioned consistently in this scenario is the Falcons, but even then people are questioning that because they absolutely were not going there with Watson
I just wish I knew what Lamar wants and what the ravens are willing to pay. Speculators been workin overtime but we’ve seen nothin concrete from either side.

I’ve been sayin for while that the ravens are not going to exceed a number which they have set as a fair market value for Lamar. That’s business and it’s just been the history of this franchise. Apparently that value is not good enough for Lamar, so here we are.

If they don’t think they can get to a deal before the deadline then the only reason to use the exclusive tag would be to tag and trade. Whether they believe that another team will be willing to pay his asking price or not, the non-exclusive is really their best option. They can still match offers or take the two ones and move on.

now the question is, what if some other team swipes him because it's not exclusive?

And in the latter scenario, it's been reported that the Ravens feel they can match just about any offer that comes. I don't see it being some prolonged process either. If teams want Lamar, they're going to have to move fast because that shapes their offseason and how they approach free agency. Pure assumption, but I would assume if an offer that Lamar wants exists, it's going to be available to him pretty quickly.

so then why is a deal not done?

This scenario assumes no one is giving him fully guaranteed, for what it's worth. If someone gives him that, they probably no longer have Lamar. However, if a team comes with an offer similar or maybe slightly more than what the Ravens are offering, they have plenty of room to match because they're already accounting for his $32M on the cap. It's all about their assessment of the market and is fully predicated on them being right about what other teams would be willing to offer.

which brings back my question:
The issues of the non-exclusive franchise tag

No doubt that it's a risk. If they get any inkling that a team would give him fully guaranteed/something that they wouldn't match, they're not throwing him out there. If they genuinely believe based on their research and sources that their offer is close to the market, it's not a terrible idea to let someone else do the negotiating for you. All in their assessment of the market. If they flub it, they pay the price. If the nail it, they just ended an extremely difficult negotiation with that player still on the team.

I trust DeCosta to do it, unlike you Eric haters out there
