The 2023 Offseason Thread

Me personally, I'll be arguably as intrigued about what happens with the secondary than the WR room.

Losing Clark I think is a bigger deal than some think. Obviously you've got Hamilton, but he spent most of his rookie year as SCB. If he's staying in that role, either Geno Stone takes over (who I believe is a FA himself), or you need another Safety. If you move Hamilton to Safety, and we don't re-sign Peters, we're super thin at Corner. Got three young guys on the roster who will need to step up, and maybe that's the route, but I think Corner early in the draft is going to become very enticing if Peters doesn't re-sign and Clark is gone.
For sure. The FO seems to be less worried about it than WR but maybe that's smokescreen already

Bateman, Duv, and Wallace will be here. That's honestly a really shitty starting point to be honest. You need 2 or 3 guys to make that a nice room. Because Duv is not a real WR, a gadget guy and Wallace is a core ST who can't even stay healthy. We know one of those spots is gonna be a draft pick. It's gotta be high. The other one or 2 has to be a FA or trade.

Like to see something like
Bateman
Addison
Meyers
Duv
DRob
Wallace

But that might be asking for waaaayyy too much
I think Duvernay is getting cut or traded. His performance escalators make him fairly expensive for a kick returner next year, and they'll get some cap savings from that. Maybe he stays, but he's not really super cheap anymore.

Obviously Bateman's back, and maybe they try to re-sign DRob for cheap. Everything else in that room is a total toss-up to me. Nobodies role is safe. I can't even say Tylan Wallace has a lock on a roster spot if they bring in like 3-4 new guys.

i think when they said overhaul, they mean overhaul, i think that means that DRob's not coming back either - dont think anyone's safe except Bateman... Duvernay probably safe but i wouldnt guarantee that either with how he finished the season (poor special teams play, disappearing on offence and then landing on I/R)

that's gonna be too much i think - from the way EDC was talking, i dont think there's any way we can afford Meyers unless his market is nothing like what we expect (but of the current available free agents, he's my favourite option i think)

right now, i think the only thing we can guarantee is that it's Bateman + a day1/2 draft pick + probably Duvernay + ???

I agree with you. I do not think anyone not named Bateman should feel confident about their spot in that room

Reading between the lines... I'd say Peters and Clark won't be here next year, and I wouldn't be surprised if they try to trade Queen either this year or next.

What do you think we can get back for Queen?

Or, its possible they realize they just can't upgrade that group much, and guys like Stephens, Pepe, JAD, etc. will just have to step up and play better.
I also agree with you here. At some point that investment in the draft at those positions will have to play. It's not like there isn't investment at those spots. It needs just one more really good guy at CB2 and we'll be great.

I hated the JAD pick though. Wish we could have had that back. Many other better corners were taken in that ra he or after.

Jamison asks the worst fucking questions

dude has it out for Lamar with all his questions - and you can tell with the way that EDC always says his name and then grits his teeth and gives him a death stare that he doesnt like him at all lol

That last question was cringe af.

What a waste of a question.

they clearly like Stephens to play a bunch of snaps - just clearly not as a starting outside CB - think they really like what he offers as a matchup DB with the ability to play all across the backend

Marlon
Marcus Williams
Kyle Hamilton
Brandon Stephens

is a decent starting point

ideally we find a CB 2 who's comfortable playing outside CB and see if we can bring Geno Stone back to come and play nickel/dime for us

and obviously they're gonna hope Pepe, JAD and Ardarius Washington develop too

but ive heard it's a very good CB class in this year's draft too

And @rmcjacket23 pointed out that Duv is really expensive too for being straight up garbage.

But given we can't pay the price for FAs that are meaningful, we can't fill 4 or 5 WR spots with guys who are upgrades right????

Like Bateman will be here. A high draft pick will be here.

But if you're moving on from everyone else, who thr fuck are going to be the other 3 or 4 guys?

For sure. The FO seems to be less worried about it than WR but maybe that's smokescreen already

think it's less in need of a complete overhaul, and also some of our safeties play some CB type roles too so there's not as much to replace in that sense

and we've got some young guys we like

clearly a position in need of support but it's not the shambles that WR is

If you're gonna overhaul you have to overhaul. That means whether you like it or not, making one move in the draft and one in FA. That's why I think you need to round out the room with guys like DRob. They make sense at the back of a roster. Not at the front. And they'll be cheap.

oh i completely forgot about the escalators element
yeah he might get cut

That presser "sounded" promising. It remains to be seen.

i mean hindsight's 20:20

Tariq Woolen's the only guy who's flashed at the position taken after JAD (and flashed enough to be a rookie pro bowler lol)

but the JAD pick was a good one at the time - toolsy corner from Bama with great measurables who dropped because of some lack of playing time and some injury concerns - that's a pretty good guy to bank on with a day 3 pick

too early to check out on him yet - hope he doesnt become another Iman Marshall

He was considered more "NFL ready" than pepe, but who became our CB4?
