Lamar Jackson

Its not legitimacy they are risking but bankruptcy and being unemployable for internet points that have no value. By the way if its found he is making it up then the Sun on the hook for millions (possibly 10s of millions) in damages JUST for this story. That is not worth the risk for any party.

Meanwhile that isnt how they sustain their careers. The reason there is no real sports journalism right now is because they have a much lucrative way to sustain their careers and that is to be first on things that we will learn in an hour by having agents and teams as sources.

To see a demonstration of this in a couple months will be draft season and when the "insiders" tweet out information on various prospects, pay attention to how often the name of the agent is in the tweet. That is because the agent sent them that tweet to send. The insiders send it as is so that the agent will then give them the inside scoop when a player signs so that they can get more clicks. Getting to be first on player signings is worth a lot more than one or two actual journalism pieces so they do that instead.

Meanwhile to use a different organization (that does this every single year) look at how Cowboys team reporters every offseason end up publishing hit pieces on whoever is about to go into contract talks. Micah, CD, Dak, etc but every offseason suddenly a bunch of articles come out questioning their work ethic or the value they bring and using anonymous sources to justify the story. Jerry Jones is an idiot though and cant help but all but state in interviews that the local reporters report what he tells them or "he will find someone who will". Note that statement was made on a program he doesnt even own but he knows he can force the issue anyway.

I am not arguing they have integrity. I am arguing the opposite. I am saying they are not reporters but mouthpieces for the sources reporting whatever they are told to without investigating just to keep their sources happy and give them coverage from a lawsuit. They are not going to risk that cushy situation for imaginary internet points.

mike preston's been saying the dumbest shit possible every year for as long as i've been a ravens fan (and probably longer)
he's never been right

he's still employed by the baltimore sun after all this time

clearly there's no repercussions

You arent held responsible for being wrong. The standard for libel against a public figure is actually very high. You have to knowingly be making wrong statements. That means he is not obligated to verify his sources claims (someone with integrity would but he does not have to) but if he is claiming to have one but does not so that he can pretend they exist to invent claims, that does meet the standard because that demonstrates that you are knowingly making false claims.

Considering Lamar is going to likely be trying to get a rather sizable contract extension this offseason, that would be a VERY expensive claim.

you've just made our point for us...

Is your point that he didnt make it up but had a source say it but put no effort into verifying that source or care whether its true? Because that is my point and the point that my premise argues.

I have never tried to argue he is right or has integrity. Merely that he has a source that is making those claims (that I personally find are highly unlikely to be true) and that he does not care whether they are true or not. He has no integrity, like most sports reporters, but is giving himself enough protection to get away with it.

I think it's more a stretch of the truth combining perhaps new intel with old intel.

For example, it could've been true years ago (first extension) that Lamar did stay up late or whatever else. That may be true then. It isn't likely true now. Now, Preston could have a scoop that maybe Lamar is the reason they [Ravens] have late practices. OK, in a microcosm, nbd. What Preston is likely doing is combining these into a narrative vs. any factual recency of the former claim with the latter new development.

I used to see Preston weekly where I used to work. I can say he would absolutely do something like that. He takes a truth and expands on it. He is a sensationalist who likes to get peoples' attention with exaggerated absolutes. His report card is notoriously "degraded" as nobody ever gets an "A" because he wants it that way.

He's a piece of shit.

You use Jerry jones as an example, okay how many times has Jerry jones or literally anyone been held liable for these hit pieces that come out every offseason? Not once, because it doesn’t happen, stop trying to argue this. Mike Preston has done this for decades and never faced an ounce of trouble for it other than fan outrage, which the Baltimore Sun secretly loves.

You understand how easy it is for him to take a one off complaint he heard years ago and use that as his source?

Never has been.. its why i stopped paying attention to analyst 15yrs ago. Its all about entertainment and engagement. He was able to get everyone to talk about it and thats all that matters…. then again, why would he make something up like that lol. He mustve heard that from someone lol. May have not been credible but he got that from someone lol.

The thing is if Jerry is the one leaking it, then he would liable for damages for making false claims. Which is why he is using journalists to be an anonymous source instead of saying it directly. The journalist is merely reporting the claims and the journalist does not have to disclose their source so in practice there is no way to trace is back. That shields both the journalist and Jerry (or maybe Stephen) from consequences.

Conversely though if Preston made it up with no source at all and that comes out both he and the Sun are going to get hit with a 8 figure lawsuit and they will lose. That is not worth the risk when its easy to find a source to say whatever you want them to say. There is always a disgruntled employee or someone looking to pass the blame to try and either keep their job or set themselves up well for the next one. The source obviously exists and likely has their own agenda. Preston obviously wants clicks so he is just going to blindly report it without doing any of the follow up work that one is supposed to do with a story like that.

I can think he is scum and that is a useful idiot for people for people who have an agenda. After all they know he will blindly report whatever they say for clicks so if you want to cover your ass you use him.

He's useful for the Baltimore Sun because of the attention. There are no repercussions for making up a source, none. They will never get hit with a lawsuit and lose. What makes you think that will ever happen? This the same guy who said the Ravens should put him on the payroll because he could do what the Ravens couldn't call out Ed Reed/Ray Lewis because he can make them play better to prove him wrong.

Stephan A Smith has been called out by many for YEARS over his "sources". They present possible opinions as fact. Its barbershop hearsay.

I think it's more of taking facts(Lamar's poor diet, other difficulties as confirmed by Simba) and presenting an opinion that generates controversy. He's an editorial opinion writer, not a beat reporter. Some agree with his opinions, some disagree, but they all are reading them which is his job, as you alluded to.

When you say someone is sleeping in meetings and staying up late playing videos games that does not come across as an opinion. He never says he "thinks" this is what is going on. He uses the red button "my sources" and proceeds to say whatever he wants.

I wouldn't call what he does as opinion based either. He is a jester and his comments on almost all great Ravens at the time tell me that.

1. He didn't make it up.
2. His source either did make it up, and/or exaggerated things to sound like he had more info than he did.

Also point out that several things in his article aren't even being reported as "facts" to begin with. They're reported under the guise of opinion.

He has literally no risk.

Nobody in sports diet is so poor that it affects how often they get injured. Now weak immune system, yes but actual physical injuries, hell naw. It wouldnt even get to that point lol. Before your body start breaking down in that way, you wouldnt likely not even be allowed to play or would be monitored very often..

I mean, I have sources too. I have a source that has confirmed to me that Jackson does not like John at all.

Now what
Really??? Lol

I mean, I feel like that's being misconstrued too. They don't love that the man cleans up on shrimp alfredo before every game, but it's not like he's out here gaining 30 pounds or anything. More of it being those little habits that they feel he could be better at, but it's not some major overarching concern.
