While I know it’s not apples and oranges I can remember the Ravens making Ray Lewis what they felt was a fair offer after the 2008 season, when he was an UFA. He wanted to test the market. They allowed him to do so and got his feelings hurt. He got zero offers. The ravens could have lowered their offer but did not. Out of respect they gave him what they had offered.

So I believe what you’re saying here is true. I don’t believe they would use the non-exclusive if they weren’t pretty confident in what they have offered, and what other teams will offer. And history tells me that when they say things like “Lamar is our guy”, they mean it. Yes it is a ballsy risk, but I think it is a calculated risk.

Lions and Jets both feel like they need to find a QB - maybe the Jets are in the free agent QB market because they need some instant coffee but there's not a ton left for them to go after now

Assuming it's the exclusive tag, I think they're going to narrow in on NFC teams. Think they're going to avoid trading him in the AFC if possible.
So I would think Falcons, Panthers and Commanders (in that order).

Plus if you trade him to anybody with a chance at contending this year (Jets, Dolphins, Lions, maybe Raiders), the 2024 (and likely later years) picks are going to be shit.

Falcons and Panthers pretty much always have made sense. There's basically like four first-round type QBs in this draft. Texans are taking one. That leaves Raiders, Colts, Falcons, Panthers for the other three, assuming somebody else doesn't jump up. One of those teams is getting left holding the bag.

Think the price tag for AFC teams has to be significantly higher than NFC teams. Imagine that was a factor in Houston getting so much for Watson. Think they would have taken a little less to ship him to the NFC.

Realistically, the "soft" deadline is more like the 13th-15th (next week). Ideally you'd want resolution on what Lamar's cap # for 2023 is going to be before FA opens, so you can be involved in the early markets if you want to be.

Good point. Depending on whether they get to a deal today, or whether they go the tag route makes all the difference. Either way the Ravens have rarely, if ever, been early movers and shakers in FA.
 
I'm guessing it ends up being the non-exclusive today. Just genuinely believe they want a resolution sooner rather than later, and going the exclusive route just delays the process.

Don't feel strongly on that but I've opined for awhile that it makes sense if knowing whether you have Lamar or not is the goal.

Well realistically, the reason you consider the non-exclusive tag is because you want the cap space to build the roster. Exclusive tag severely hamstrings what this team can do in the offseason in terms of personnel upgrades.

Basically a lot of paths under the exclusive tag involve cutting players you'd probably like to keep (Campbell, Zeitler, Pierce as examples) or just simply not upgrading the roster to a point where you're going to be a legit contender this year.

And there's not a ton of value in paying $45M to a player when you don't think you're going to be a contender.

For me, the non-exclusive tag makes no sense this week. You carry the same cap hit now on both tags. The cap hit doesn't increase for another like 7 weeks or so.
If you feel you can't get a deal done in that time, you can still trade him before the draft. And would think you'll get at least the same compensation in a trade in April as you would by a non-exclusive tag today. Likely significant more.

Yep, if we plan on negotiating all the way till deadline, that should let us know that we are close or atleast theres something there. Lamar doesnt wanna leave bmore!!!!

Dont agree with that about the lions at all
They’ve been building and goff has been fine but now they’ve got real aspirations so need to find a guy to help put them in contention rather than just being a plucky upstart

They either need a high pick qb or a big splash at the position
 
Talk about a swing of emotions if they actually pulled off the contract . Everyone’s mentally prepping them selves for a trade and then bam , long term deal

I’ll ad a 3rd. Both sides have kept important details of the negotiations very close to the vest. All we know up do this point is from rumors, here say, and speculation. Makes me think they may be closer to a deal then we think.
 
All of the "reports" on Lamar are still wild. Have Schefter out here saying that not many teams are interested in the contract and draft capital it would take, and when specifically asked about Atlanta, says he doesn't get the impression they're in. Literally like 2 minutes later from a different source saying that talks between Atlanta and Baltimore got serious in Indy and they're the most likely destination.

I can't wait for all of this to be over.
