While I know it’s not apples and oranges I can remember the Ravens making Ray Lewis what they felt was a fair offer after the 2008 season, when he was an UFA. He wanted to test the market. They allowed him to do so and got his feelings hurt. He got zero offers. The ravens could have lowered their offer but did not. Out of respect they gave him what they had offered.I don’t think a non-exclusive would be for trading purposes. In my eyes, the goal of that is solely for Lamar to explore other offers with the assumption/knowledge that what the Ravens are offering is in line with what other teams are offering. If they go with it, I see it as a way for them to try to bring him back to earth and see what his real market is.
Of course, the risk is that they flub their research and a team does offer him what he wants and we’re fucked
So I believe what you’re saying here is true. I don’t believe they would use the non-exclusive if they weren’t pretty confident in what they have offered, and what other teams will offer. And history tells me that when they say things like “Lamar is our guy”, they mean it. Yes it is a ballsy risk, but I think it is a calculated risk.
