The Offensive Line Thread

Not even Nelson.
I'd much rather sign good FA, if available and we have enough cap room, or let Lewis/Siragusa/Hurst compete for a job. If anything, this season showed we can put together serviceable O line despite all the injuries.
I really, really, really want two playmakers at offensive skill positions with our first two picks.

It wouldn't really bother me if we went high on skill guys... but even if we landed two stud playmakers I don't have any faith that Flacco and our coaching staff could do anything with them. We would be loading up for our next era.

That's the idea. Get everything in place for new QB.

He had ATS on 30 of 54 drop backs versus the Titans (56%). Much of that was by design as the Titans did not rush often with numbers (including 12 3-man rushes). Based on historical numbers, I'd expect him to be in the mid-high 6's per pass with that sort of time, but he averaged only 4.7.

Here is my OL article from last week with that information:

Great article I enjoyed it a lot. I agree Hurst and Skura playing how they have been being an incredibly positive surprise.

It's risky though, in the last 10 years the Pro-Bowl rate for first round WRs is 35%, that means 65% never justify their draft position, the All-Pro rate is 15%.

The All-Pro and Pro-Bowl rate for a first round OG? 50% and 87.5% respectively.

I have no faith in this FO picking wrs. Go OL unless they are "can't miss" prospects. Still believe FA is our best route for pass catchers.

does that include other teams?

Nope, just the Ravens. All it really says is that Roman's system involves a complex set of pulls.

Grubbs pulled a lot in 2008, primarily because the Ravens passed a lot out of the unbalanced formation and when they did, he pulled to "rebalance" the line.

If we can keep him at LG and move Lewis to RT, it would be ideal.

I won't be upset if Lewis is in the running for the RT spot next season, but I will be if the Ravens don't draft a tackle fairly high. That's a position where the Ravens currently have 0 depth and it killed them explicitly in week 11 and has limited their offense otherwise in terms of % of helps required.

I know folks are going to hate this, but I want a playmaking safety and a tackle as the top 2 picks. The only other defensive player the Ravens must find is another ILB (could be a later round, but needs to complement dime). Other than those, I'm good with offensive picks.

If we kept him I’d want him as a backup. Not a starter.

If that's true, it really means the Ravens can't afford Hurst, because he'll make too much to be a backup. I've said there is a thin landing strip of play quality for this season where the Ravens might resign him. He has to play poorly enough that other teams say he can't play tackle yet be only serviceable and not a solid starter at guard. He managed the first part against GB, but he's played too well as a guard for other teams not to notice.

The most similar situation for a former Raven might be Chris Chester, who was a pretty good guard, but just not good enough to play on a line that had Grubbs, Birk, and Yanda in the middle. He signed a big deal with the Redskins and went on to have a solid career.

Now the only way Hurst will be resigned is if the Ravens lose Jensen or decide they can't afford him and Hurst becomes plan B.

I’d prefer the Ravens sign Quenten Nelson over a right tackle, unless Minkah is available, which is doubtful. Having a strong interior and someone who can step in when Yanda retires would help out tremendously. I agree we need to move Lewis over to right tackle. If we can’t get Nelson I’d be cool with McGlimchey also.

I have to give credit to our oline and coaching this season, despite being made up of 60% trash (or 80% when Stanley is out} PFF say that since week 5 we're 8th best in pass block efficiency, not I'm sure there are other factors at play but that's punching above where we should be.

i think thats more of an indictment of the quality of line play in the rest of the league than our oline being good

Crazy when our o-line (mostly our tackles) played like trash against GB and yet we're still top 10.

ronnie stanley has been as good as any left tackle left healthy in the league - he's been a better run blocker than any of them and has been good in pass blocking too, howard has been average-great depending on the game and opponent, jensen has been a road grading revelation, skura has missed less blocks than any other raven lineman all year and hurst has been pretty good pulling prolifically - the problem is that we are so thin now that if we lose any one of these players the dominos fall - its a really fragile chemistry this unit has built that works in combination and bowanko as the 6th lineman has been good too

so ronnie stanley being absent makes the team worse in 3 positions: left tackle because hurst has to fill in, left guard because our best pulling guard isnt playing guard anymore, and jumbo/max protect packages because bowanko is inside the tackles

that all being said our jumbo/max protect packages next year are gonna be nasty if we can retain jensen

Stanley has been nothing short of amazing in his two years as a Raven....when healthy. Makes me wonder what a healthy Siragusa or Lewis would do for this o-line.

As to your last point about the jumbo/max protect packages, you know what I miss? The Flacco Sneak on 3rd or 4th and 1. That was almost a given first down conversion a few years ago. Of course, Flacco needs to be fully healthy because I refuse to believe his back is fully healed.

Yeah, think that’s a reason why we aren’t doing the Flacco sneak

part of it is also that we dont have yanda, or juice or a mauling offensive line in general - 1 mauler in jensen isnt necessarily enough because the defensive line is gonna attack jensen as hard as they can on a sneak play - skura and hurst have been ok this year but neither is gonna road grade a dlineman back (unless hurst is pulling but you arent pulling in short yardage on a sneak)

This is true. Too many times Collins was getting hit in the backfield either before he made his cut or just when he made the cut. I hope we get Nelson if he's available.
