Way-Too-Early Prospect Watch: 2019

I love his elusiveness though. Might not have that home run, but can turn a no gain into 5-10

He's good no doubt, I'd love him here (although I'd rather have some real IOL to fix the run game). He's just not 1st round good.
Montgomery has a lot of talent and I would certainly take him depending on where we can get him. With that being said, it’s too early to say because we don’t know draft stock until at least the combine except some select few. I really like Snell a lot—like a lot—and want him here pretty badly; however, we must solve the C position before we do that. I’m all for a top C/G, an ILB who can cover like Hansen/White/Wilson, an OLB who can consistently bring pressure, or that breakaway #1 RB. PIT and many other teams have shown you don’t need a Gurley but the Rams and Saints have shown what happens when you get one. NO had serious issues and Payton was rumored to be on the outs until that fantastic draft that got them Kamara and crew. We need a draft like that. We really really need to get a coverage ILB.

Isn't Young a good coverage backer?
I think he’s been solid but he’s still a rookie and we haven’t seen him enough yet to say one way or another. I also wouldn’t hinge such a critical problem on one guy because if he gets hurt then you’re back to square one. I would address the draft as if we have nobody that can cover the middle of the field. If you expect Young to solve our problems then I’m afraid we’ll continue to struggle with the middle.

You think so? I think pass rush is at or near the top but I think you’ll either get a C or a G but not both early. I think C is higher and if we’re smart we get a guy who can do both but is primarily a C. I’d put coverage LB higher than S but this list could be legit. I think it depends on who is there of course.

It'd be useful but not a big need. Fix the o-line and our run game will be fine.
I agree but I think a top RB is still a need because even the best OL can’t make guys make it happen if they don’t have it.

Fix the O line, then have Lamar and top RB lined up. Make it great, not fine.
Look at the Rams, Chiefs, Saints....
We need to focus on C since we have a LT and RT and some guys for the inside. If we can get a backup LT then do that too.

I wanna come up with a film grading system for prospects, does anyone wanna help with this?

I’m thinking you start at 0, and for inconsequential plays you do nothing, plays where the player did their job properly gets a +1, do their job and also finish the play +2, fail at your job -1, fail at your job and the direct result is a failed play -2, a spectacular solo effort gets something like +5, a brilliant playmaker moment gets +10, and a complete boneheaded inexcusable play gets -5(something like a DT just abandoning gap assignment for no reason and taking himself out of the play).

I really would like a more formal way to keep track of how we view prospects for this team, we can assign grades and rank prospects and have our own big board based on factual grades that everyone at PF can use as a reference point when they’re studying film

Isnt a great draft for rbs. That was the previous draft and they missed their shot.

Just like when there was probably close to about 15 legit wrs in 2014 they picked a mlb who can't cover and a dt that was traded after 2 years. Not picking allen robinson in round 2 was a fireable offence

you're absolutely right but more importantly with regards to the RB is the RB in the passing game - the easiest mismatch to create is an RB vs a LB - invest in a good RB and you're not just improving your running game but your creating a focal point for your passing game too

the big thing about the 3 teams you've mentioned is that their RBs are a threat in the passing game (in some cases more of a threat than some/many wide receivers in the league)

Yep - "top" RB would imply above average ability in a passing game, too.

I see it as IOL, pass rusher, coverage LB, RB, WR, S

- Interior OL: Blatantly obvious

- Pass rusher: They have a plethora of okay pass rushers which is how they take advantage of crappy offenses, but there’s not a legit one that can beat a good offensive lineman (except Suggs but he barley plays) which is why there’s rarely pressure versus good OLs

- Cover LB: Maybe Kenny Young can be this guy, hopefully the coaching staff gives him playing time and themselves a chance to see if he can consistently become that guy

-Taking a running back 1st/2nd round is pointless unless he’s a great runner and receiver. Otherwise there’s successful backs taken nearly every round and that go undrafted we’ll see if the ravens can ever find one

- WR: Resigning Brown should be the main priority of free agency, but adding another explosive threat to pair with him would be ideal in opening up the field, especially with Lamar out there. There’s always good WR’s taken in the 2nd and 3rd even if the ravens have never found one.

- Safety: So hard to find quality ones so might as well take one if you have the chance. Weddle will be gone soon and Jefferson isn’t really a cover guy.

man i like Hayden Hurst but I would have adored the most recent draft if we'd taken Will Hernandez at 25 and Lamar at 32

Man we missed on so many 2nd round WR studs.. it’s a joke. Keenan Allen, Allen Robinson, Tyler Boyd. Juju, Michael Thomas.. even Chris godwin.
We just can’t draft WRs to save our life.
