Welcome to the Ravens, Hayden Hurst and Lamar Jackson

So...we pick up a 3rd round pick movin out of slot 16. We pick up a 4th round for moving out of slot 22.

Then we give this year's 2nd round.......next years 2nd round and a 4th round pick to move up to slot 32.

We wind up with Lamar Jackson, who had the lowest wonderlick scores of his class and ozze calls the moves "masterful". (Serious...its reported Oz actually called his own moves "masterful"....maybe they weren't his moves. Decost right?) Harball is elated.

Does anyone else but me believe we came out on the short side of the "chip" exchanges? Two second rounders and a fourth to move up for a Matt Elam / Courtney Upshaw spot in the draft (Late First Round)...where we draft a guy with about the same cerebral approach to the game as those other former Ravens? Oh and by the way, the Patriots sung the praises of Lamar Jackson and let me see, what did they do?

I've said Oz was done in 2012 and he just keeps burying us long after he's bleached bones.

I was good with getting a quarterback. But I wanted the right quarterback. Lamar Jackson can and will run. He's a big Tyrod Taylor but....

Come on man

Love both of these picks and did from the get go. Jackson is in a good situation to groom... And is sooooooooooooooooo much better than Josh Allen was it's not even funny. Jackson is going to be a good QB if properly developed. Hopefully Urban gets him to become a guy who can only beat people with his arm(and yes. Jackson's arm is that talented).

Hurst? Bad last name but this one can play. I said in my writeup that if he were not 25 that I had a late first, early second round grade.. Well that's where we got him. I HATED us passing up on Edmunds to trade back... But I really like Hurst as a player. He's got great athleticism for a TE, catchers mits for hands, solid blocker. He needs SOME work as a route runner, but he's not a total liability in that regard. And say what you want about Flacco but he's 100000 times better than any QB Hurst had in college. I agree with @Simba wholeheartedly. Hurst is that rare TE who could contribute from day one.. And I don't see him as a low ceiling high floor guy. He does have a high floor, but his ceiling is also way higher. His hands are too good as is his athleticism for him to honestly by a bust barring health, and if he can become a good and smooth route runner(which he does have the skillset to become), we are talking about a perennial pro bowler. It's easy to see why we picked him over Andrews and Goedert. He's just a better athlete than Andrews(who's not lacking in it at all) and more pro ready than Goedert. Hurst's game itself has no issues. He's very good after the catch because he has some initial burst to him, he has decent moves in the open field for a TE, his speed on the football field for a TE is faster than his 40, he's good at contested grabs.

I get it. We needed a guy who can attack the seam, and Hurst is probably the best fit for us in the entire draft, who was actually talented enough to go here... And everyone is bitching and moaning even though Hurst's talent level could turn him into a #1 receiving option here in Baltimore.

Unlike James this fucker can play. I'm good with this one. Last time we took a 25 year old TE it was a massive success.

I wasn't commenting on the value of the picks, though I do get that we essentially got Hurst for a third (plus there's an economic value of not having a second-rounder to fuck up this year or next...), which isn't a bad haul. But even though I'm excited about Jackson's potential, I'm just saying I'm not getting fully on board the hype train until I see his mechanics noticeably improving. It's obviously a huge step up to the pros and it's too easy to say that we'll simply coach him up given it's so much easier said than done.

oh yeah i get that - i was just sharing my pathway for him to have success

Hurst is just that classic pick that I didn't expect but should've, and it'll take me time to get used to it but I'll end up loving the fit. Happens every fucking year.

I’m bummed we didn’t get either DJ or Ridley but It seems Hurst is a perfect fit and will contribute immediately. On the surface seems like an “A” rated pick.

Trying to get pumped for Jackson but my initial reaction is that of him being a potential bust. Just too many negatives piled up, a project player picked that high is a gamble. And he just doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed. Regardless, maybe those feelings are wrong and he turns into a beast, I hope so.

for a team that has really made a lot of TE picks in recent years, we pick another TE.

I know, Watson is gone, Crockett Gilmore couldn't stay healthy and was waived, still hasn't been picked up yet. Darren Waller was a stoney and never flashed. Nic Boyle has been useful but nothing more and Max Williams has been a major disappointment. So Back >>>>>To The Future!

Just listened to Lamar Jackson and I hope I'm wrong, but I would not have drafted that guy in a million years. He is so much smaller than I thought too. Just frail. I can see it now, somehow he gets the nod over Flacco, due to injury or JoeJoe not being the sharpest tool in the shed either, Jackson starts, its a pass play, Jackson takes off to run after his first two reads are covered like a blanket, Jackson plants his leg to cut against much bigger and faster NFL linebackers and his career ends in that first pass play. Its just the way its going for us. You'd never know it here though, the masses are in a frenzy with optimism.

Its a terrible burden to be a Raven fan and right all the time, but right in disappointment

Belichick spoke highly of him. I think it probable at this juncture that BB was trying to influence the Bills and Jets who both needed a QB into drafting a guy that can't be coached.

To me our 1st round machinations illustrate clearly why its time for the Front Office revamp. We should have a viable Tight End by now after all that was allocated to drafting for that position the past four years, but we didn't. Then we go and draft a guy at an age where half his NFL career has already been played.

Then, we wheel around so much in the 1st round that we make it clear we are not sold on Jackson, but give up half a ransom to get back and select him.

I'm sorry, its just comical. All the more so when oz's parting words are "It was masterful"...don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out oz.

Those two second round picks.....OUCH.

Wow. Two second round picks for a potential franchise QB. Can you believe it. Sarcasm by the way.

I've got mad concerns about both -- Hurst never really found the end zone a whole lot, and Jackson's accuracy and wonderlic leave me feeling alarmed -- but I'm optimistic about both.

I like Hurst. He's everything I look for in a tight end except for the lack of TDs. Big AND athletic. Can catch everything and block reliably. He'll end uo our best overall tight end since Heap -- guarantee it.

I'm deeply concerned by Vick comparisons for Jackson. After spending 10 years with a QB with accuracy issues and problems reading defenses I have worries about getting another. He makes big plays but so did Joe. I'm not wild about drafting one read and runners to be QB.

If he's franchise he goes at 16 or 22 for sure.
I've seen some crazy picks by the gang that can't shoot straight, but this was their Magnum Opus. Oz hung the epitaph on this one. "Masterful" Watch it play out.

As I said, those two lost second round picks at this juncture feel like being gut shot.

I am more worried about Jackson.
If Hurst had a QB half as competent as Jackson did at USC he would’ve put up many more TDs. Hurst’s ceiling is very high and his floor isn’t bad either.

Jackson is going to a situation where we should be able to fix a lot of holes in his game. I’m he hilarious thing here is that Flacco wouldn’t be the worst qb for him to sit behind.

I like both. Hurst is a far far far safer pick, but if Urban is as good of a qb coach as Some say, there is actually a chance Jackson comes out as the best qb in this class. Dude learns how to beat teams with only his arm, look out. He has most of the same issues Newton did coming out of school which inspires confidence in me

Hi Folks. Long time reader but decided to bite the bullet and actually sign up to this community and see if I can add to the conversation.

I also do not understand fans like you Ray Ray. You keep saying we gave up 2 2nd rounders bad move, were doomed but you do realise we moved up 20 spots as part of that yeah? We moved from No. 52 to No. 32 while dropping back 7 spots from No. 125 to No. 132. I dont call that us 'losing' 2 2nd rounders. We jumped a massive 20 spots from round 2 back into round 1 at the cost of a 2nd next year and 7 spots in the 4th this year.

Pretty sweet deal to me no matter who the player is. In fact I will go on to quote the man and say it was "masterful" when you add in that 5th year option on the pick and that we acquired pick No. 65 earlier in the night, just 13 spots back from our original 52nd pick.

As I said at the start there seems to be a minority of fans that will just crap all over anything no matter what route is taken. For years I have watched us pick BPA or go safe instead of for need. It's not always perfect but we have seen some great players over the years with this method year after year though when the pick is made our Front Office get blasted for it.

Last night i had the same feeling that we were going to overlook need with Edmunds sitting right there for the taking. I was already imagining how fun it would be to watch him and Mosley tear it up for us in the middle of the field but was also expecting to look on here and see the 'OMG Ozzie leave now/good riddance/you have screwed us" comments but to my surprise we traded back.

It was an even bigger surprise when i saw Hayden Hurst announced as our pick but i thought "well at least they are trying something different? Something needs to change". Then while sitting watching heavy-eyed at 5am hoping the 1st round would just end as the sunny Scottish Sun started to crack through my window BOOM. Our name is back on the screen and Lamar Jackson's name is being out as our new player. What a tonic that was for tiredness.

How can you not be excited by that? Here we are year after year where we all get our hopes up about playmakers only for Ozzie to reign us back in with the 'sensible pick'. This time he gives us 2 potential game changers (and a Trade UP?) and people still want to crap on it?

Not saying either or both will work out but hey they are at least going for it. That Superbowl run everyone talks about Boldin but without Pitta there to take opposing Ds attention I doubt he has the same run. Oh you are covering Boldin? There you go Pitta. Pitta again? Thank you. Oh now you have realised you need to cover Pitta here you go Boldin take it home.

With our new receivers why would you not want to give Flacco that option at Tight End, he thrives with that option. Our O started to look ok last year when Watson started catching passes even though it didnt last. The Safety Blanket Tight End allow's Flacco to open up his game.

On Jackson i doubt we ever get a shot at an elite QB talent in the next 3 to 4 drafts and rarely do you get one with Jackson's potential just sitting there. It is a need for us and it only gets bigger each year so why not take that shot now.

Only time will tell if this was a good or bad draft for us but I would rather be the optimist in this situation and realise we done something out of character last night, enjoy, let it play out and see where it takes instead of dooming it all before it even begins?

You definitely did the right thing by joining the family. Welcome aboard.

Just don't waste all your useful energy on guys like him.

Oh and cheers for watching the draft from Europe!
