The Movie Thread

i think he's the best current working hollywood director
you could make arguments for ava duvernay (if wrinkle in time is a hit) or wes anderson/quenton tarantino (both incredibly stylistic directors) or kathryn bigelow and a few others

but villeneuve's recent success is unprecedented: he has made 7 incredible films in 7 years - he's prolific, efficient and most importantly these films are good - what makes the success even more unprecedented is that they span multiple genres...

also funny that i mentioned bond and then this headline just popped up:

"Bond 25: Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve was offered Bond 25, hopes to be free for 26 or 27
His 'fantasy' project clashed with his 'dream' project"
I'm watching anything this guy makes at this point

he would legitimately have to start making multiple trash films in a row for me not to watch every movie of his - and i hope a lot more of the general public works out who he is too with a similar attitude because id hate for him to not get given the keys to amazing films just because people didnt go and see them

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was the most appropriate sequel ever. It's just as over the top as the first one, violent, vulgar, funny.... Is it exactly like the first one? Yes... But it's just so much fun.

100% agree I never understood why it got panned - if anything it cut out the boring parts of the first film for me lol and it had some incredible moments

We’ve got 2 really cool new trends in action film making and its really nice not to have shaky cam quick cuts everywhere:

1 of the trends is this kingsman style hyper-stylised overly violent focused camera moves - it fluidly and not confusingly shows you exactly what you need to see and flows between movement to movement and object to object

The other trend is this super-long-take fight sequences that rely on incredible choreography and brutal violence e.g. John wick and atomic blonde

People said it was because it wasn’t realistic....

The first movies bad guy had swords for legs and when peoples heads blew up it was Colorful. The movie was so over the top it’s not even funny. It’s a satire on the spy genre and a damn good one.

Give me a Third one! Kingsman 2 is better than any fast and furious movie

Jumanji isn’t that good of a movie but I’ll be honest, I could listen to Jack Black talk like a valley girl for hours. There’s something endearing and utterly hilarious about it

Nope, is it good?
And btw same question for the movie on Churchill

It’s pretty good - the acting is phenomenal and it’s a really good story - not sure about the film as a whole though but it’s good not sure it’s great though

I haven’t seen the darkest hour yet and honestly I’m not sure I want to unless I hear great things about it...

Have you seen the Churchill one then?

No I haven't, the Darkest Hour (since now I know its original name) and the Orient Express are two movies I'm quite intrigued with. I'm always looking for movies that are not in the blockbuster category but still easy to approach for a large public.

Orient express is great fun - not a brilliant film but great fun - I really enjoyed it and I’m sure it’s extra good if you don’t know the story beforehand

But there’ll be lots of good non-blockbuster films to see soon because the Oscar run will be starting this week

So there was a publication that deemed Tom Hanks the greatest actor of all time, or at least of the modern era... Now I love love LOVE some Tom Hanks, and he's actually #2 for me personally, but still. Who makes up your top ten?

1. Daniel-Day Lewis. Do I need to give an explanation to explain his greatness?
2. Tom Hanks. Two consecutive Oscars, has a good ability to not physically transform himself for most roles, but still nail the part anyway. An easy choice
3. Robert De Niro- Been in some crappy movies but imo is the greatest method actor of all time. Unlike Al Pacino(who spoilers doesn't crack this list for me even though he's great) he doesn't usually play himself in every movie anymore.
4. Denzel Washington- Similar to Hanks he doesn't really need to physically change himself to nail his roles. He never really plays himself and makes each character his own
5. Gary Oldman- Best chameleon actor of the modern era bar none. The fact that he doesn't have an Oscar should be a criminal offense.
6.Leonardo Di Caprio- Yup. He's ahead of Pacino, but for good reason. He can do both the method AND not have to change himself entirely for a role. Likely currently the best actor RIGHT NOW as he's at his peak tbh. Will probably win another Oscar, and it's well deserved.
7. Robin Williams- Most underrated actor in human history. While his improvisational comedy is BRILLIANT I found him getting lost in roles in even the worst of movies that he starred in. Good Morning Vietnam is one of my favorites and the only part of that movie(though it is a big part of the movie) that screams Robin Williams being himself is the comedy.. As he was so good at it that the good directors let the dude improvise most of it. Whenever they did not let him improvise... The movie sucked. That's a quality literally nobody else in Hollywood can lay claim to. RIP dude. You were taken from us way too soon.
8. Micheal Caine- Shame that he and Anthony Hopkins now do movies for paychecks only basically because both are phenomenal talents.
9. Kevin Spacey- Yeah yeah yeah. Allegations and shit. No denying his overall talent though. Playing two of the best movie antagonists in cinematic history is no small claim. American Beauty is practically made by him and is a FANTASTIC movie. Sure.. He's a scumbag but a damn talented one.
10. Anthony Hopkins

I just tried doing this in my head but couldn’t distill it down to 10 so I tried 10 men and 10 women and still couldn’t do it - I’ll have to think on it more and try my best but I keep thinking of people who I’m just like “I can’t leave them out...”

All I know is that Alan Rickman and Saiorse Ronan are both on the list

I’m not putting up a top 10, but I really like Al Pacino, Will Smith, and one of my favorites Morgan Freeman as well. Agree with your assessment of Robin Williams. He wasn’t really given a script. Just had an outline he had to follow and improvise. Absolutely magnificent.

I watched Darkest Hour last night, a few things:

•The movie has a lighter tone than expected, it starts more silly and gets more serious as time goes on, but I never felt the stress I wanted to going in.

•I really rooted for Churchill through the whole thing and Gary Oldman kills it as Winston, especially when he has to turn it up to 11

•There are some great lines throughout but most of them belong to Churchill, unfortunately pushing most of the supporting characters into the background

•When the supporting actors get their chance though, they shine. Especially Lily James and Ben Mendholsen

All In all it wasn't quite as good or dramatic as I had hoped and heard, but I would still give it a solid 7/10

SPOILERS AHEAD

•There was a very abrupt make-up between Churchill and the King, who go from hating each other the suddenly supporting each other seemingly out of nowhere

•The underground scene between Churchill and the people was amazing, especially when he speaks to that little girl
