The Movie Thread

I could never get into Hunger Games or Maze Runner, or stuff like that because of the YA aspect. Just the immature bull-shit that goes down, like in the 100.

I cant do Star Wars man lol. I dont know why, just never could. Although i think the last one i liked, cant remember which one lol. But im guessing you have some years on me? Maybe not, cant remember from our old conversations lol. Never been a superhero movie kind of guy either, i hated Black Panther. I do like origin stories when they go back and explain things. All Christian Bale Batmans are fantastic.

I even like The Cloverfield Paradox, which many hated. Interstellar, The Martian, stuff like that im into.

Alita does look a little out there for me, but considering who is involved in it, i'll give it a chance.

Also, speaking of awesome cinematic Hold the Dark. Watch it

haha im only 23 lol

The Martian is like comfort food to me - i could watch it over and over and over again
funny though that 2 years in a row there was a massive tentpole sci-fi film that revolved around saving matt damon from space

superheros were never my thing either but a housemate who adores them meant i could never miss one and so its become something i watch and enjoy (mostly)

yeah i realize YA certainly isnt for everyone but i love the revolutionary stories they tell - i guess im a sucker for the politics and sociology of those stories

it's why i adored bladerunner 2049 because it blended together so many elements of storytelling that i love

haha i'd forgotten about syriana - someone worked out that the cost of saving matt damon in all those films was around 900 billion dollars

just any old movies?

Hahah Thats where i got it from, just decided to take off each expenditure
Courage Under Fire (Gulf War 1 helicopter rescue): $300k
Saving Private Ryan (WW2 Europe search party): $100k
Titan AE (Earth evacuation spaceship): $200B
Syriana (Middle East private security return flight): $50k
Green Zone (US Army transport from Middle East): $50k
Elysium (Space station security deployment and damages): $100m
Interstellar (Interstellar spaceship): $500B
The Martian (Mars mission): $200B

And yea, just go through some underrated movies, we seem to agree on a lot of the same style. Just finished watching a movie called My Dinner with Herve with Peter Dinklage. Outside of the terrible accent he has in the movie, i loved it. Really moving. Very. I recommend. And its a true story

Also forgot to mention how much i love District 9. Hell or High Water.

in which case i dont know if you've watched it but the third film in an unofficial trilogy by the same writer (sicario, hell or high water) is a film called wind river which is pretty great - quite bleak but ultimately really good

this is a bit more niche but its a new zealand comedy called hunt for the wilderpeople - it's really sweet and has a similar type of humour to flight of the conchords

this one's a bit off piste but it's a korean film called the handmaiden and it legitimately fakes you out over and over again in brilliant ways - it's by the same director who made Oldboy which is batshit crazy

another comedy: the death of stalin - really dark satire about a really crazy period in history

i dont know if you've watched any of the modern planet of the apes trilogy but they are excellent (especially the 2nd and 3rd ones)

I know you said you weren't a huge fan of superhero films but i would recommend Logan anyway because it's that good and separated from the rest of the x-men lore and franchise - it's not really about superheroes (as many of the best superhero films arent)

im just looking back at 2017 and seeing how awesome the year was for sci-fi (and superhero movies) compared to 2018:
  • Bladerunner 2049
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • War for the Planet of the Apes
  • Okja (would recommend if you haven't seen)
  • Logan
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Wonder Woman
  • Valerian
  • Kong: Skull Island (oddly beautiful film - well made and decently put together picture)

have you seen the modern version of Dredd? i didnt enjoy it when it came out but i watched it again recently and was actually blown away by how good it is...

Sorry about the red, it was just easier that way

Reminds me of Hold the Dark, have you seen that?

  • Bladerunner 2049 -not bad, was pretty slow imo, beautiful though
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi- Thats the one i liked

  • Logan
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Wonder Woman
  • Valerian
  • Kong: Skull Island (oddly beautiful film - well made and decently put together picture)- Really enjoyed, although just makes me sad how it depicts America because its sadly true. Sam Jackson gets pissed because Kong kills his men.....when they started bombing his island lol

have you seen the modern version of Dredd? i didnt enjoy it when it came out but i watched it again recently and was actually blown away by how good it is...

I thought the new Dredd was amazing, way better than i expected, i guess thats what happens when you have low expectations. Maybe i should do that in life.

Doesnt have to be Sci-fi. I watch a lot of movies and am looking for more non main stream.

Have you seen Infini or Frame? Really curious on that one.

Might have to go watch Event Horizon or Jacob's Ladder again just for old times sake

Im watching the new Predator right now. Hopefully its good.

The Post i thought was really good

Hated the new It

haha event horizon is insane lol - i havent seen hold the dark but you mentioned it earlier so i looked it up and that's what made me think of wind river

i dont want to prejudice your view of predator already but dont go in with high expectations

Here's a curated list of some of my favourite films if you want some more suggestions:

Moonrise Kingdom
End of Watch
Shop Around the Corner (old black and white film but it's where the story for you've got mail comes from)
Selma
Mustang (Turkish film about a group of sisters growing up in a very devout and oppressive Muslim family - would recommend this highly - but only if foreign language films are something you're open to watching lol)
Howl's Moving Castle (English Dub version with Christian Bale)
We Need to Talk about Kevin (I'm not sure I can ever watch this again - it's an incredible film if you havent seen it but it's horrible)
The Book of Eli
Cloud Atlas (maybe my favourite film of all time - but i hesitate to suggest it to anyone because it's nearly 3 hours long and might need repeat viewings because of its complex plotlines - i love it though because it's so rich and full of depth that you do pick up new things each time you see it)

Cloud Atlas is absolutely a masterpiece and most likely my favorite film of all time. It wasnt like anything i have ever watched. I wouldnt even say i watched it, i experienced it. Amazing

End of watch was like they made Southland into a movie, just more hollywood. Amazing.

Book of Eli was fantastic.

Im glad you recommend We Need to Talk About Kevin. It was on my list. Maybe ill watch that net.

You have a very interesting taste in movies. Are you going to school for cinema or something?

I like heavy stuff.

Have you seen The House that Jack Built? I havent yet.

Whats the most messed up movie you seen? I wonder if its the one im thinking of. My buddy and I played "who can find the worst best movie" when we were in the Marines....i won. And im not talking Canibal Holocaust where its just gore porn.

Sidenote, i would love to go to school for film, but i just feel like ill never be able to break in and do anything with it, like your saying

- A Man from Earth- for any history buffs out there that want some great dialouge watch it. Its about a professor who claims to be 14000 years old. I love it.

Man I can't believe someone else actually knows about this movie! I love this thing. You watch the sequel yet? I plan on getting to that at some point.

im not a big fan of lars von trier as a person so not that keen on watching the house that jack built but ive seen some messed up movies
the most messed up ive seen is quite famous for being banned in multiple countries - it's infamous for being obscene and hard to describe... any guesses?

I absolutely loved it man. I was on the edge of my seat. Going in with such low expectations and to come out with a possible top ten movie of mine is something i never expected. Talk about a great surprise. I had to watch the second one right after because i was so pumped, but......its nothing like the first one. I wish they just never made it.

Long time no talk, hope all has been well

A Serbian Film

Yep.

Also, im not very familiar with directors and writers outside of the main stream guys. So you definitely are more knowledgeable about film than i, ill gladly listen to any recommendations

i have a very eclectic film - ill keep thinking of some more stuff

i wasnt feeling either of those - prisoners i find tough to watch and blade runner is really long lol
Fair enough lol. Prisoners isn't exactly a relaxing watch, and yoou would need to settle in for Blade Runner.

I actually have a HUGE poster that my manager gave me, ill post it when I can.
