The 2021 Offseason Thread

Amid all the covid-vaccination questions Lamar had to answer today, one thing that caught my attention was when a reporter asked Lamar what does his backyard throwing session look like when he’s at home quarantining. Lamar mentioned a lot of footwork stuff and things he learned from “Adam and Tom House.” Then followed that with he worked with Adam in between the involuntary camp and training camp.

Adam Dedeaux And Tom House runs 3DQB, and help with the throwing mechanics / motions with people like Tom Brady and Drew Brees. I love it.

Precisely where his tighter crisper passes are coming from then. Thought he looked like he put some time in with a coach between the two camps. Do any of you know if he holds the ball differently now?

Lamar Jackson said he's talking to team doctors and "learning" about the COVID-19 vaccine.
Jackson resumed practice Sunday after missing the team's first two weeks of training camp after testing positive for the virus in late July. "I just got off the COVID list," said Jackson, who missed a 2020 regular season game with COVID. "I got to talk to my team doctors and try to see how they feel about it, keep learning as much as I can about it, and we'll go from there." Jackson has mostly dodged questions about getting vaccinated against the virus, calling it a personal health issue. His vaccination status could make him a riskier fantasy pick over QBs who have gotten the jab. The Ravens offense could be left with Trace McSorley or Tyler Huntley under center this season if Jackson remains unvaccinated, tests positive, and misses at least ten days.

I read this and I have two reactions:
1. It's great to see that you're actually willing to think about possibly getting a vaccine at this point.
2. What in the ever-loving fuck have you been doing for the last like 4-5 months? The time to discuss with your doctors and "acquire information" about the vaccine was like May bruh, not August. By August, you should have made up your mind and have all the info you need.

Like this, to me, reads like his sources of info on the pros and cons of vaccination is coming from like the Barber Shop or something, and he's yet to actually talk to, you know, medical people who have real actual knowledge about this stuff.

I guess we should be happy that August isn't too late. If he said this shit in like October, it would be one of the all-time dumbest things I'd ever read.

im with you here - like i wonder if the fact that he had covid and then had it basically just as bad this time around despite already having had it 9 months ago is a bit of a wake up call for him - i think he's probably been around poor information and my hope is this recent bout has shown him how important the vaccine is

it's worrying that he hasnt supposedly spoken with the doctors but at least the positive there is that he's not "ignoring" the advice of medical staff (which is quite obviously only going to be one answer which is take the vaccine)

yet again more plaudits for keith williams... he's a route-running perfectionist and savant - and with lots of the "top" WRs missing time, i think we're seeing duvernay and proche reap the rewards of his coaching

Shite, if I’m the leader of the team and about to earn a huge pay day, I’m doing absolutely everything I can to ensure I’m on that football field

idk but i got this screenshot from the last vid they posted on twitter:

and from the other freezes i was able to make it looks like his index finger is slightly further away from the tip of the ball

i hadnt thought to look at it - but yeah it will be interesting to see whether that grip change is something to look for

It's mind blowing to me to be honest. I honestly don't think people are bashing him enough or talking about it enough. My guess is the media will turn it into a race issue if they do, but the reality is that he's got a great chance to cost himself some pretty good money and miss multiple games this year if he doesn't get vaccinated. He could end up on the close contact list and miss time without even ever testing positive.

And like the media and everybody can talk about how minority populations have trust issues with vaccinations, governments, etc., and that's all well and good. However, I promise you that you'd be hard pressed to find minorities who would trade in the kind of salary or comp that Jackson would forfeit from missing time out of "principle" to not get vaccinated.

to confirm - ben cleveland working with the 2s and 3s today - a lot of work to do if he wants to win a starting job in the next 3 weeks or so (OL starting 5 normally settled a couple of weeks before the season starts)

The team is obviously doing really well on the vaccine front, but the ones that aren't vaccinated seem to be really confused. Between Lamar seeming to think that he can't get Covid a third time and Justice Hill's tinfoil hat Twitter, there's a lot of work that needs done on the education front.

And I mean, just logically, if they're in like the 90% range for vaccines, that means a shit ton of your teammates, both on this team and leaguewide, have opted to get it. And that includes a shit ton of minorities. So at the very least, you could be picking those guys brains and understanding why they chose to do it. But waiting for many months to even have discussions with doctors about... yeesh.

I guess I was naive, because for most of the offseason, it never even occurred to me that some of your more valuable players may opt not to get it. Likely I assumed there would be an outlier here or there or whatever, but you've got some fairly high profile players who are very likely to sit out games this year because of it.

He sounds like hes never going to get the shot. I hear excuses and stalling in that interview. Its a shame because so many people look up to him as well.

Ok

it's interesting reading them back - in past years ive not kept my notes - only my big board spreadsheet...

i feel pretty good about that oweh one so far...

ill see if i can find my daelin hayes notes too:

HAYES: (4th round - 149):
- 6’3 261
- Bendy with burst, power and lateral quickness but not overly speedy
- Explosion is inconsistent – some reps show off great explosion but not often
- Shows flexibility and savvy to knife through gaps and create penetration in the run game
- Seems to lose the ball carrier after penetrating though
- Strong at the point of attack and has pop in his hands when he stacks and sheds violently at times (sometimes can get locked in and driven off the line)
- Disciplined when left unblocked and good lateral movement when squeezing
- Some snaps dropping into coverage and was given some time at LB for 1v1s in coverage at the senior bowl
- Has rushed from multiple spots all across the line
- Shows real power in his hands with some of his strikes
- Decent get-off
- Savvy pass rusher – will attack what the offensive lineman opens and will adjust mid-rush/counter well – uses speed-to-power to punish tackles who over-react to his threat outside and lose leverage or he’ll cross face to get inside – bends well when turning the corner and combines the bend with good hand usage
- Had a really good senior bowl showing off power, hands and quickness at different points
- Not a spectacular athlete which might limit his potential ceiling – but has enough traits to be intriguing
- Coming off a torn labrum
you should keep a notebook with all of your notes.

See: DeAndre Hopkins

apparently a massive day for ardarius washington - kinda been waiting for one of these type days since camp started - preseason's gonna be massive for him but with an ageing anthony levine and only 2 locked in starters at safety, there's a massive opportunity through this preseason for him to earn a roster spot
what happened today?

I was a big fan of Ardarius and was pulling for him late in the 3rd through the remainder of the draft.

Like I said, I'd be absolutely thrilled for him to make the team. If he does, it absolutely means he deserves it. I tend to eat a lot of crow at times, and I would be more than happy to eat it again here!

my guess also based on the rules about training in the offseason with teammates is that hollywood has got the vaccine (because he was able to go and train with andrews and bateman which was against the rules for unvaccinated players) - probably why lamar was notably absent from those sessions

but that would mean that his best friend on the team also has got the vaccine

I've spoken to people who think they don't need it because they had it. Yes, they are getting bad information.
