The 2021 Offseason Thread

Ferguson is why you don't look at college production when drafting players. And Oweh is gonna show why you do look at physical traits and attitude when drafting high.

I think you need a healthy balance of both depending on the position. Was anyone really that impressed with Ferguson’s sack numbers playing out of C-USA?
I think the Ravens knew exactly what they were doing drafting him in the 3rd and Oweh in the 1st. However, I think it’s still concerning to see so little production from Oweh coming out of a Big Ten that’s frankly not very good. Time will tell, hopefully it works out

When you’re frequently doubled up or even triple upped, it’s tough to get sacks. Combine that with a shitty defense and QBs getting the ball out quick, it’s even harder to do. He got pressure and created havoc in the run game as well. He got close to getting sacks several times. It’s not like he couldn’t do anything at all

my god!

like i know stanley's out and phillips is probably more of a guard than a tackle and the whole offence in general is a bit of a shambles

but triple teaming a rookie in his first training camp is outrageous lol

im trying to hold myself back on how hyped this camp is making me but ive been on this train since his 2nd presser as a raven - i really hope we get to see an ok number of reps of him next saturday in the 1st preseason game because im starving to see some of these guys (and especially him)

Love the guy. Now I’ll say this about preseason. Don’t be surprised if the starters are given less snaps than usual as it’s a longer season now and coaches will most likely try to save up for the marathon of 27 games versus sprinting in through preseason

for sure - but rookies often play more than their veteran counterparts - that's what im hopeful for

I love having Lamar as our QB, even with the covid issues.

But yeah, teams do plan against him in a fundamentally different way than pocket passers. Eventually, even if it's just due to getting older, he'll lose some of that insane athleticism. Then teams will focus mostly on stopping the pass. That offense will have to be entirely different than the current one, and teams won't play afraid of him taking off on every play. He'll probably still be good, but we won't know how older, mainly just passing Lamar will handle it.

Five years sounds good to me. It'll lock him up until he's about thirty, and then we can see where he and the offense is at.
You really believe that given Lamar's work ethic and constant desire to improve every aspect of his game, he won't be one of the better pocket passers in 5 yrs? He already is one of the better ones if you discount all the naysayers and doubters regurgitating the same old tired shit on repeat. He can't throw outside the numbers! He doesn't have a threat outside the numbers that can go up and make contested catches till now! Or Lamar will lose his athleticism not to be a dual threat?

Randall Cunningham was a dangerous dual threat QB played for 16 yrs in this league and he wasn't anywhere as talented or athletic as Lamar Jackson. I think you are all underestimating the staying power of Lamar's style of play. In fact, I'll go this far as saying you're severely underestimating it.

I am praying EDC sees this situation like I see it and Bisciotti agrees with him. Let's take this gift we lucked into and make the most of it. I'm praying he signs at least an 8 yr deal.

Judon played in the division II and had like 20 sacks - or at least he led his subdivision. I don't think the ravens knew what they were doing when they picked Turd. Our entire board was screaming to not pick him but unfortunately it was inevitable - iirc Cullen was a huge fan of his.

Or it could hint that our OL play isn't where we want it to be...However, i'm still optimistic. Athleticism and willingness to work&improve is there

While I do care that the OL gets better and holds up, it’s not like they’re the worst line in the league by any means. Plus it’s not like everyone else is feasting outside of the top guys like Mad and Campbell. So really not reading much into it honestly

Thank you. I agree with this completely. It’s not like he’ll be terrible without the crazy good freakish athleticism, I just don’t feel he’ll be deserving of Mahomes or Allen tier $$$ at that age once the athleticism is gone, unless he improves his mechanics and outside the numbers passing
when you go out 4 to 5 years, 43m per year will look reasonable. I do believe he will be worth every penny when he is 30 to 32. Look at other mobile QBs in the league. It's not like he won't be able to run, he just won't be able to run like he does. Lamar's a freak and he's always going to have good athleticism. Of course, lets not forget that he can also pass the ball when given the opportunity.

Eh I see your point but I’m not in full agreeance. I feel that his stellar athleticism opens up more passing lanes than he otherwise would have. Which obviously allows him to pass even slightly better because there are bigger lanes open. When his athleticism starts dropping even slightly defenses will adjust accordingly. He absolutely has to get better at passing outside, there’s no other way around it

I agree he has to get better at passing outside the numbers, but don't doubt that will come. I think the extension is going to be 5-6 yrs.

I’m ok with that. Anything like the Mahomes contract though would be ridiculous.

i mean as of right now with stanley and zeitler out, bozeman transitioning to C, Villanueva swapping sides after his worst season and an open competition at LG...

if the week 1 OL looks anything like it does right now, this is 100% among the worst OLs in the league... We'd probably be looking at Phillips, Cleveland, Bozeman, Powers and Villanueva as our starting 5 which would be a recipe for disaster

obviously if Stanley and Zeitler are ready to go then the line is dramatically improved

That literally might be the worst line in the league.

I’d expect Lamar to be very handcuffed and the run game to take all priority until those guys are ready to go.

we are really spoiled in that regard, if our whole OL goes down for a few weeks we can still run the ball well enough to win games on ball carrier talent and scheme. It’s really just hoping we have a full 5 come playoff time

Really the second part of our schedule-Super Bowl is when we need full health. That back part looks tough and will be make or break

Currently my top 7 WRs are the following, although I only see us keeping 6:

Hollywood
Watkins
Bateman
Duvernay
Proche
Wallace
Cain

Thoughts?

cain's been the surprise - he and jaylon moore have both been unexpected but idk that either of them have done enough to make the roster

i think what cain's shown though is that miles boykin is completely irrelevant to this team at this point - cain's a better receiver than miles in these practices with a style that's more like what you'd expect from a boykin body-type

i think we keep those top 6 wrs but im honestly not completely convinced we dont go with 5 although that would be harsh on proche (who i think deserves to make it) - if we do carry 6 which i think we do because of the injury issues within that unit, i think wallace is riding the inactives unless he's a special teams contributor
