The Running Game, The Lamar and The Ronnie

Ugly game all around, and it's disheartening. We should have beaten this team. The Steelers are not all that good, but neither are we this year. The D did their job for the most part, but the offense...

Lamar is all out of sorts right now. Mechanically he's not there. Mentally he's not there. He has a few shining moments filled with a whole bunch of questionable decisions. You can tell the lack of OL is hurting him - his clock is moving so much faster than it was last year and he's panicking. He's lucky he walked out of there with only 4 turnovers, which says a lot.

I just don't understand what Roman and the coaching staff are doing, either. That critical 4th down was telegraphed and everyone watching knew it was coming. But in other moments, it's almost like the team is so focused on their egos and proving that Lamar can be a dominant passer instead of just doing what works. Don't get too cute. We killed them on the ground. They couldn't stop us. And it felt like at the most critical moments they way outthought themselves.

I really feel for the O now with Ronnie done. I think Brown and Fluker stepped up well but damn, that's a pretty ugly unit now.

i just watched it again and he was contacted in the head and he was defenceless but im not sure that fitzpatrick's actually hitting him - it looks worse because of the player behind him

i think we probably had a better case for the player behind snead hitting snead in the back before the ball got there - but it's more the force of that hit that makes them make contact

you could argue both ways on the helmet to helmet - but if it had been a reversed situation i would have hated that if it had been called on us
Idk, to me it looks like MF is jumping right through Snead's head, but it's hard to tell. Doesn't really matter anymore.

Edit: can kinda see it from 31 on the back angle. That flip did make it look worse.

the tweet was deleted what did it say? i missed it.

also, im starting to wonder if lamar can be a super bowl winning qb, hes been not just bad compared to last years standards, hes been downright awful in all but 1 game this season.

if he hadnt played like the MVP last year after the bye there'd be all sorts of questions looking a lot like yours right now...

he's looked like a bottom third of the NFL type QB so far this year - not many full-time starters playing worse (at least none who havent had their starting spot questioned)

it's the chiefs AFC and we're all just living in it right now

it's disappointing because the AFC really hasn't been all it was cracked up to be - but unfortunately neither have we...

our defence is awesome and our running game can still run over people but our passing game is a fatal flaw that will stop us from achieving anything right now

It is kind of funny how Lamar's MVP season has spoiled us. He hasn't been all that good so far this year but if we had Flacco out here keeping us in the game despite turnovers, we'd all be saying how well he did. Just feels like it's a different standard now. Not saying that's a bad thing because we know Lamar can be better, but we also have to realize how much worse it could be and has been.

I can accept the loss and understand that it's on Lamar for the turnovers. I have zero problem blaming Lamar for the loss as it was on him, but damn it Greg deserves some responsibility for the play calling. We've seen it against the Chiefs last year and this year, we seen it in the playoff loss against Tennessee. Today we saw it again, we got away from our identity and tried to pass way too much. Late in the fourth quarter, we went back to the run game and what do you know, it worked.

That 4th & 2 play call to spread everyone out isn't fooling anyone, my friend even knew we were going to run it with Lamar up the middle when we lined up like that. The problem we have with our offense is the same problem we had with Cam in 2012, it's so predictable. I remember opposing players would say in the media how predictable Cam's offenses were. Roman is running into the same issue with his predictability.

As for Hollywood's tweet, that is a reference to Roman for sure. I kind of wish he got hired as a Head Coach now. We were so unpredictable and creative with our offense last year, what happened to the creativity? I guess if we got rid of Roman, James Urban would take over but at this point, it's time for a change.

And it's not just a pass catcher problem like so many are making it out to be. It's a failure at all levels. OL isn't getting it done which is making Lamar panic, and then the coaching staff is struggling to adjust. Even the running game... the numbers look great and we still have a dominant team, but it feels like there are also many more negative yardage plays that are pinning us deeper and forcing us out of the plan. Just an all around failure and it's not good that they haven't figured out a way to clean that up yet.

This is yet another example why we have to find a new OC. Roman always calls QB keeper/draw in these situations. It's obvious by now. It worked against the Seahawks, Bills and 49ers but has failed since the Titans game.

I mean as the line and the WRs really been helping out Lamar all that much though

i think it's because we've seen stylistically we've seen we can't compete with high-octane passing offences and inevitably that's a fatal flaw that will stop us climbing the summit

when flacco was playing like this we'd already won multiple playoff games and when it was happening post-superbowl we always had that to hold onto - we'd seen him not only win playoff games but the whole thing

with lamar we've seen him fold against our (currently two: chiefs and steelers) biggest rivals on every occasion he's played against them - 5 of his 6 or 7 worst games have come against the chiefs and steelers and the road to the superbowl each year is inevitably going to run through at least 1 but probably both of those teams maybe twice a year

i think that's why it feels different - flacco was uneven but showed the ability to beat our biggest rivals even when he was also playing down to the opposition

dont get me wrong im not saying that lamar is trash im just saying that's the context for why i personally feel different about lamar right now vs how we would feel about flacco in a similar situation

I have no problems with running the ball there. That's our identity and that's the right call in my book. But we had Dobbins dominating that drive and you split him out wide and telegraph that Lamar is taking it himself. That's the mistake. Any fan with basic football understanding knew it was coming. It's foolish to think the Steelers didn't have that snuffed out from the moment they lined up.

they're not seemingly trying to stem the tide or find alternative ways to get the passing game working either - we're still doing the same stuff that hasn't been working for the first 6 weeks - the route combinations are mostly the same - we're not being creative or trying things - we seem to be happy just coasting to victory or defeat with the passing game just being what it is

i think that's what @cdp is saying - we'd been destroying them out of those heavy sets and getting outside them with the pitches all drive and then run it up the gut and we decided to spread them out and run it with zero decoy or option look or read - just lamar vs their DL and linebackers

I was more getting at the idea that if post-SB Joe Flacco was putting up the numbers that Lamar has now - about 1700 yards of offense (running and passing for Lamar), 14 TDs, and 4 INTs, we'd all be pretty ecstatic. But the MVP numbers he put up last year have just made us spoiled. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that either. Lamar set a high standard and he's just not doing it this year.

Agreed. It's kind of sad that we have so much speed on O and have not found a way to get the deep passing game working at all. Just doing the same things over and over again.
