Joe Flacco

Tbh, after watching games were flacco has costed us due to bad clock management, dumb decisions, horrible passes, not reading defenses, and not making pre snap adjustments.... how can you call him a top 10 qb? at this point it doesnt really matter about the stats he can put up cause it wont make him a top 10 qb.. he simply dont have those qualities that a top qb possess.. at the same time we dont need that from him though, we just need him to be an avg qb

A back up qb just won a sb with a new cast. The system isn't changing, and I've personally felt that the new weapon excuse isn't t as valid as some make it. Time will help better chemistry but for the most part you should still get it done. Brady who a few here think is overrated came back in the AFCCG against a top 3 defense without Gronk and went berserk in the SB even with Cooks out.

Goff who I thought was bust city turned it around with a new scheme and 3 new wrs. Wentz was in the running for MVP with 2 new starters. Saw Jimmy G go to a new team and succeed and those are young guys. How much time do you expect for them to start clicking?

This makes me sad, I’ve cussed out flacco for years now but damn it’ll be painful to actually see him leave. It’d truly the end of an era when Jackson starts playing

Suggs and Flacco leaving soon is gonna hurt almost as much as Ray and Ed.

It really does feel like just yesterday that I was watching our young exciting rookie quarterback. Damn does time fly.

I saw that Schefter tweeted that Flacco has no guaranteed money after next season, but overthecap says that if we cut Flacco there's a dead cap hit. Can someone explain this to me?

I feel you. it is easy to forget just how bad things were at the QB position before he arrived. No one is interested in revisiting that. He's been a transcending force for this team, despite his lows at certain spots - particularly over the last few years.

The future isn't cemented yet. Joe's still going to start for this team next year and who knows what will happen with Jackson. Given what we've invested and given his youth, we all really hope Jackson's a success. It will be interesting to see if this fire that has been lit under Joe's butt (along with an infusion of offensive talent this offseason) sparks something of a turn around.

I just wouldn't pronounce Joe dead yet.

So, as I understand it:

When you get a signing bonus, it's guaranteed money upfront, with the cap hit being prorated throughout the length of a contract. For example, a $25 million signing bonus for a 5 year deal would have a $5M cap hit each year.

The salary is not guaranteed. So, in 2021, Joe has a $21M salary, but somehow no prorated cap hit. His 2021 money isn't guaranteed. In 2020, he has a $20M salary and another $8M against the cap. So, if we cut him, we save $20M, but we're still on the hook for $8M. Either way, we're saving a shit ton of money if we cut him any time after 2018.

Also, Spotrac says that there's a potential out after the 2019 season. I take this to mean that 2020 and 2021 may be option years, but I don't think that's what's been reported in the past.

Maybe Schefter misspoke. Maybe there's an option. Whatever the case may be, I think Joe's getting cut or traded in 2019 unless he resurges in a big way and Jackson looks like trash.

Well, Tru I think you already know I don't care much for stats. When I say I don't think he'll be top 10 this year, I'm talking more about the eyeball test; i.e., what he does on the field, not what his stats say. There's no way he's going to have much of a connection with a brand new WR cast, and that WR cast isn't much to begin with, outside of Crabtree...and we still dont really know what our OL is going to look like or if he'll have anything worthwhile to throw to at TE.
Statistically, I'd be happy if he just ranked in the top 20 this year.

fair enough lol.

i do hope they will draft a receiver or 2 though

Pretty much everything what the raven said.

Dead cap is calculated by adding up the remaining signing bonus, option bonus and guaranteed base salary.
After the 2018 season we'll save at least 10.5 by either releasing or trading him.
I think Schefter meant there's no guaranteed base salary or option bonus left after 2018.

I thought there was a way we could get out of the prorated bonus. If that's not the case I think Jackson sits for 2 years because a >15 mil dead cap hit is a pretty large pill to swallow. @The Raven a potential out means that we can plausibly cut him. Because the dead cap is relatively low after 2019, that's when they predict we may cut him.

Yes cutting or trading him would net a 16m dead cap hit in 2018. But you also save 10.5m. If Decosta thinks he can use those 10.5 to improve our roster then he'll cut him. But in this case he has to find a veteran backup Qb.

Team can spread the dead money to 2 years.

Watch Flacco have a great season and create a dilemma.
I guess at that point we look to trade Joe .

They are not gonna keep a 1st round pick like Lamar on the bench for long .

Everything's going to feel real when we get a Lamar Jackson thread. That'll be the point where life after Joe is no longer a hypothetical or an impending thing some point in the ever-nearing future.

I wonder what the over/under is for when that thread hits 151 pages...
