The Random Thought Thread

i mean MM is the first defensive playcalling HC (other than bill belichick) to appear in the superbowl since Dan Quinn in 2017 and the first defensive playcalling HC to win the superbowl since Mike Tomlin in 2009

and that doesnt describe the vast majority of winners of the last decade+
most have been high-powered offences led by elite QBs with opportunistic defences (generally with decent defensive fronts) and low injury reports
running games have had very little to do with it
I don't think Quinn (could be wrong on this one), BB, or Tomlin called the defense as head coaches.

think we would have seen more LB picks and stunts to generate space on the interior
think there are still a ton of things schematically and with coaching you can do to create pass rush opportunities better than what the ravens had going on
That’s the big reason I’m going with “better” instead of “successful” in this case. Going to hold firm on the idea that I don’t think we had the horses for a consistent 4 man rush.

i think quinn tookover playcalling halfway through that season but the point still stands that he doesnt normally
tomlin i think technically doesnt but actually does according to various coaches that have worked with him

for sure
but i think we could have used a lot more sim pressures, stunts and line games more generally to manufacture 4 man pressures more often

obviously still not ideal

but definitely didnt maximise the talent that was available

im not one to complain a ton about day 3 role players getting dropped
but hard to argue that Aeneas Peebles wouldn't have given you more dynamic pass rush threat from the interior and even if that's just 5-10 snaps a game that's more valuable than taven bryan or josh tupou

Yep, will still never understand the Peebles thing. Didn't play because he couldn't stop the run, yet we kept trotting guys out there that offered nothing against the pass... especially when stopping the pass was our issue for a bulk of the season.

my issue with this is what Oweh turned into when he got traded

We didn't have much on the line and the guy we had wasn't getting the most out of them

Chargers also had Mack and Tulipulotu as the main focuses of that defense/pass rush so Oweh wasn't "the guy" like he kind of had to be here

ESPN/ABC will broadcast their first Super Bowl since Super Bowl XL in 2027. They revealed the official Super Bowl 61 logo, so for logo color conspiracy people, you have Orange at the top, blue ocean at the bottom.

That’s obviously browns and titans

The more things change the more they stay the same. Stout defense, a proficient running game and ball security are the most important pieces in competing for championships.
Mike Macdonald and Sam darnold had a million chances to let the patriots back in that game, and they refused to.

They took the points when they had them, 3 points at a time they applied pressure to the NE offense and let their defense take control.

Darnold saw how the DBs were playing the catch point, so he backed off of the risky throws. Mike Macdonald saw that passing the ball often would be risky and that he was in store for a defensive slugfest, so he said let’s give it to Kenneth walker.

Seattle was happy to get a few first downs and pin the patriots deep, he didn’t believe their offense could march 90 yards for points, and he was right.

Absolute master class from Mike Macdonald, just do what you do best, take advantage of what your opponent allows you to, and play sound fundamental football, take all the points, and pin them deep and keep pressure applied via field position.

Far cry from the Harbaugh analytics based coaching, where “statistics show you have a better chance if you go for it in this position” with no regard for game flow or matchups.

I said this a while back and i still mean it… mike macdonald the best defensive play caller ive ever seen.
I’m with you. The 2010s era of quick release, hot reads and dink and dunking can not survive against his defense, and the 2020s era of bombs away is an “at your own risk” deal against his defense. The way his guys are always ready for what the offense will try to do to counter their attack is so impressive, guys are in position and you just don’t catch them slipping often.

And his db blitz designs are just incredible. Mf is Leonardo d’vinci of defense

Only thing is, i know he isnt gonna be able to keep this up right? Man i hope minter can scheme up shit like this or even get close.

Sam darnold certainly isn’t the best or most deserving of a sb ring, but I can’t lie I’m happy for the dude. Darnold is unquestionably a good dude, a team first kinda player, and dude has kept his nose down and kept grinding to find himself a niche in the nfl after a seriously disappointing start to his career.

Big respect to Sam darnold.

Nobody is mike Macdonald. But I do believe minter at least is gonna bring the defensive culture back to the ravens and make our unit one to be feared. Now it’s on EDC to build both trenches and Lamar to take HIS offense and make it to a championship, I have utmost faith in what our defense is gonna become as long as they stay healthy and EDC can address a spot or two

If you have a 4 man rush that can win, you can do anything. And obviously Mac is better at getting juice out of the horses he has than Orr ever will be. But I still struggle to see Mac taking the horses we had this year and being overly successful with them.

Kinda what i’ve emphasised this year. Defensive struggles largely to do with a lack of pass rush. It’s really bad. When you have a four man rush that can get home then you can do anything, the opposing side is pretty much cooked.
Case in point, look no further than our game against the Pats. Our inability to get Maye either from a lack of pass-rush or lack of ability to actually sack him.

This. Just from his schemes alone, I expect this defense to be better than this past season. However, I feel like we'll be saying that there's still some to be desired from a personnel standpoint. MM's defense in his first season with them wasn't this elite by any stretch.

If anything, this makes what the Rams did to their defense twice in SEA that much more impressive.
