The Random Thought Thread

certainly seems like the AFC should succeed from the union now. Maybe the Rams would like to switch conferences now...
I kind of wonder if a paradoxical effect will happen in the NFC. Logic would assume it would become awful but I wonder if this will cause a huge youth movement for the conference and make it better. It may not be immediate but anyone have a number of how many picks the NFC has over the AFC this year and next year in the early rounds?

Round one is split 16-16 but NFC has 10 picks in top 16.

For this to make much difference though, I reckon NFC would have to have few years of slam dunk drafting to catch up.

it's possible but also: 3 of the top 4 picks in the draft are in the AFC too lol - and the texans and jets have 2 each inside the top 15

that being said, the seahawks now have multiple 1st round picks in 2023, the giants have 2 top 7 picks in 2022, the eagles have 3 top 20 picks, the lions have 2 in the 1st round also... even the packers have 2 1st round picks

draft is certainly front-loaded with some NFC picks but this is a weaker class than some other years - maybe not the best year to have a top 16 pick (sucks to be the ravens i guess)

Ahh cool thanks! I don’t know, I know I’ve seen it said this is a crap draft but I think that’s hard to say right now. Reason I say that is because it’s very subjective. For example, how good those players turn out to be will really dictate this a lot. I’ve seen touted draft classes have numerous busts and some drafts considered crap to have standouts.

for sure - i dont think this is a crap draft - but by comparison to the last 2 (at the top at least) it's certainly weaker and less deep than those 2 and it's certainly less strange than 2019 which had a bunch of elite prospects and then fell off a cliff but was made to look a lot deeper in hindsight by all the successful WRs on day 2

so you're right that a lot of this is partly done in hindsight and it only takes 3 or 4 guys to hit on day 3 in a "weak" class to make it look better in hindsight

i think maybe "weak" is the wrong word to use for this draft class - id more say it's uninspiring but that might be because we've been spoilt by the last 2

I think that's fair. These are prospects, not players, for me. As a result, I do view them as prospects only until they play. Kind of like when we drafted Perriman and people said we would have a deep threat for which teams would have to account & I mentioned we should pump our brakes there. Obviously, I was proven right (and this is not a pat on the back here) but it's more a moral to the story--can't expect these guys to have the same respect as a Pro as they had in College. I've grown to see these dudes as just really good prospects compared to "average" prospects. Uninspiring seems to be a good fit though if we're talking semantics.

should the Texans and Jets actually count as AFC teams, I mean come on now. They should be relegated to the CFL

Still no news on a Harbaugh extension... is it possible we go into the season with him on the last year of his contract?

I think it’s not something that often comes out a lot iirc? Last time we extended him there was a 3 month delay I thought in reporting it

Last time we extended him was when we promoted Roman to OC back in 2019. Harbaugh was given a raise in January of that year, not too long after our loss to the Chargers in the playoff game.

They’ve already said they’re working on extension a couple of months ago

How do y’all feel about Patrick Queen going into year 3? I’m personally VERY high on him, I think he’s gonna make a lot of plays in the backfield, and I think we’re gonna see some plays in the passing game too. Think he’s still a solid 2 years away from being able to really make that leap and just needs the experience in zone coverage, but I think he’s gonna get there eventually and take another step this year.

I feel like he’s getting a lot of flack from all sides really, lot of fans, talking heads, and content creators that seem to think Patrick queen is really not working out, lots of guys mocking LBs to the ravens in days 1 and 2 like Lloyd, dean, and Clark.

They're mocking LBs to us because we basically have none. Malik Harrison looks like a bust and Queen, so far, isn't a 3 down linebacker. Assuming we're still going to employ a 3-4 baseline in some capacity (though not the primary alignment), you need another inside linebacker (or two). Maybe we re-sign Fort or Bynes, but they're just stop gaps and everybody knows it. Could certainly use some youth and speed at linebacker.

As for Queen, I'm generally fine with him. I think he's a bit of a disappointment that he had to be essentially "demoted" from a Mike linebacker role to the weak side, though he did excel there. That'd be fine if he was like a day 2 draft pick, but this guy was a top 30 selection.

I'm not really that concerned with his play, as long as he expands on what he showed late in the year.

Learning curve has been steeper for him than I assumed.
New DC might benefit him - Wink's defense needed a lot of communication - I hope Macdonald somewhat streamlines the way our defense is set up. When I watch his tape you can clearly see when he's guessing and when he actually knows what's going on.

i mean queen finished the season in great form - the whole 2nd half of the year he was great after he had that 2 week stretch where they took away a lot of his snaps and let him reset and eased him back into his responsibilities in the defence - he never went back to 100% of the snaps but he was playing 80% of the snaps at a high level

mike tomlin wasnt lying when he said Queen might be the best linebacker in the AFC North

i think the problem in 2021 was they put too much on his plate too quickly in year 2 (after keeping him fairly free in year 1) and he was swamped and it slowed down his decision-making - they took things off his plate to reacclimatise him and get him being aggressive and proactive again and then added those things back in a slightly staggered way

He definitely improved a lot and I reckon he'll be even better in a new D. Less confusion all around, much easier to communicate and play.
I wouldn't mind pairing him up with Lloyd but I doubt he'll be available for us unless we jump up from our 2nd round pick. Not sure how much juice is left with Bynes and Fort (if we try to bring them back).

Queen was playing really well at the end of last season so if he can keep improving then I'm excited to see what he can do in year 3. We still need more LBs, but I have no issues with Queen going forward.
