The General Front 7 Thread

I havent seen anything from williams. A little from ZDS but nothing at all from Twill. None of our players other than suggs and now henry are consistent enough for me to give them any type of credit

I have seen Williams get into the backfield with ease on some plays, your eyes fooled you. Find some replays, trust me you are going to be happy with what you see.

Yeah, I keep harping on our bad edge defense all season. We seem very good in the middle (all 4 guys played well) but keep leaking on both ends. It was better, not ideal, before Williams and Urban injuries and since then it turned into mush.
Last year's Judon and ZDS might have been able to help but they both slimmed too much to effectively hold the edge. Not convinced Kaufusi can cut it there.

Time for Suggs to step up and Williams to get more playing time.

Where's Upshaw when you need him?

What was up with that? Why did Judon and ZDS want to lose so much weight? Mostly Judon concerns me

I’d like to see Tim Williams get more opportunities rushing from a three point stance. Most of his rushes at this point have been from a two point stance,

i quickly looked at some of his snaps and he rushed from a 3 point stance on 1 of the 4 snaps i saw - the summation of those 4 snaps (half of his total workload last week which is a small sample size) is 1 bull pressure vs penn that forced manuel to throw quicker than he wanted towards cooper on 3rd down, 1 bull of penn that i was kind of a pressure but maybe not as well - the ball was out pretty quickly, 1 snap where he realised he wasnt being blocked so squeezed down the line of scrimmage - looked like manuel was supposed to be reading him but didnt really give much of a disguise about handing the ball off, 1 snap (this was where he was in a 3pt stance) where penn tried to cut block him which caused him to trip a bit on his way to manuel who noticed him and was able to avoid him once he regained his footing - but initially they moved the protection and the pocket away from his side - i feel like they realised penn was struggling vs him so they rolled the pocket to the right and had penn cut block him - this was the play where roberts got 22 yards and williams lost backside contain - but if he juked penn cleanly (which he was so close to doing) manuel wouldnt have had a chance at making that play - it was a ragged play by oakland that relied on penn getting something on williams and he got just enough - filmstudy calls it losing backside contain but im hard pressed to criticise him for penn getting lucky and tripping his feet as williams juked him - that momentary loss of balanced stopped him from changing direction

either way he looked good in limited snaps

I'm guessing they or team wanted them to play faster. On the other hand, Tim Williams seems to have never left the weight room after the draft, he looks really big to me.

I'd rather all these guys train, practice and play to their strengths. We need to stop trying to turn every rookie we bring in into new Suggs. It's not possible.

He is constantly getting pressures and forcing the QB to get rid of the ball. He may not have a sack to date, but those will start to come as he plays more downs. Wish we would play him more as a situational pass rusher this year, rather than as a rotational guy. He was awesome against Donald Penn this week and he's a top notch left tackle.

that's becoming a trend - he comes in with very few snaps but in those snaps makes good left tackles look positively average: he clean beat joe thomas a couple times vs the browns, made villanueva look silly a couple times vs the steelers and this week bulled penn twice and penn got lucky on another couple of plays vs timmy

level of competition is clearly not a problem for timmy - he just needs to start finishing now

I was just talking about this to a co-worker of mine who is heavy into the college football scene. Why are we trying to make players go against what they are really good at?

This makes me think Carl Davis maybe suffering from this. Judon looked last year like an absolute steal and a monster when we allowed him to go after the QB.

yep, seen all of those plays. I can't wait until he gets his first sack.

That's typical of you though, you only see what ends up on the stat sheet, if a player gets multiple pressures a game you don't see it because it's not recorded as a sack.

Tim Williams, basically all season long, has gotten pressure very easily, he is giving starting NFL OTs a really hard time and if he's able to see more rush snaps then he's gonna start getting home with his pressure.

Is anyone a bit worried with our young rushers. Judon, Bowser and Williams have been pretty quiet lately. I hope they get a breakout game vs the bears.

Judon lost too much weight, Bowser and Williams are not on the field enough

williams has been really good but not getting a huge number of 3rd down snaps
bowser looked great the first 2 weeks and hasnt been used much the last 3 weeks after he made a couple of mental errors with the scheme etc. vs the jags
judon looked great vs the bengals rushing and great vs the raiders in coverage and holding the edge - has had bad games in between

they're young - they're inconsistent but they've all shown already that they can be really good

It's the Ravens way to force a circle peg in square hole... I'm not anti Pees, but I fully believe with someone like Wade Phillips you'd see a drastic change in our front 7s pressure.

id like to see timmy williams play on more rush snaps not just rotationally and id also like to see some stunts with timmy being the 2nd man in and using his speed
id like to see bowser coming in and either dropping into coverage to facilitate some more exotic blitzes or rushing off the edge
id like to see ZDS stood up over the center even more
id like to see judon being more physical on the edge
id like to see us be more creative with how we use anthony levine as the dimebacker - notice how he didnt drop into coverage and got a huge sack for us on one nice blitz

now pees got more creative this week in terms of scheme but id like him to get more creative in terms of personnel too because at the moment so much of our defensive substitutions are rotational rather than tactical

The edge guys are still young, they're getting better and as the season goes on they'll perform better. Just give them time, let them ge as a unit and get acclimated to the scheme. They'll be a wrecking crew one day.

Give the young guys time. Pass rushing is one thing that rookies do not pick up quickly on anything more than a limited basis and in Judons case he is playing more of an every down role which has limited his pass rushing slightly but he is much improved in other areas which matter just as much if not moreso.
