Around the NFL: News and Rumors

Jaguars are apparently exploring their options at QB. If Bortles passes a physical, the Jaguars can shed his entire $19M salary to make a run at a quarterback. Oh boy... If that's the case then I can see the Cousins sweepstakes being between the Jags and the Jets.

apparently joe thomas has suggested the browns front office wont make the kind of offer they'd need to anyway which leaves little competition to the jets and cousins's contender of choice...

the jags should cut bortles the moment he passes that physical because we're getting close to that contract being guaranteed now...
if im bortles i maybe take it slow on my rehab...

This from JLC:
"Went back and checked my timeline - which I generally ignore - over my reporting on Marcus Peters from last week. #hatetotsayitoldyouso"

the responses are hilarious:

others posted stuff like this: "It’s like the guy with the worst batting average in the league bragging about getting a base hit lol" and "Every once in awhile a blind squirrel finds a nut" and "I guess when you’re right 1 out of 20 times you have to celebrate the victories."

and an nfl reporter even posted this in response to JLC: "This guy is constantly wrong and never, ever raises his hand. But he gets one right and throws himself a parade. Pitiful. Care to comment"

but what's funny about him tooting his trumpet is that he wasnt even first... it was profootball talk and mike florio who was first i think and he was also behind local KC radio too

Omg, he finally got one right. Amazing

what's hilarious is that the one he got right was piggybacked off other outlets anyway
when you hear JLC tweet the words "im hearing" just google the thing he's talking about and notice that it most likely was reported a few hours earlier by a different outlet

"The Jaguars and QB Blake Bortles are finalizing a multi-year extension that keeps him in Jacksonville for years to come, sources say. It’s essentially done and should be official tonight."

WOW - Cousins options slowly reducing and somehow the jags are ruining their own future... how have they seen enough from bortles to want to keep him (if the jags are doing this they had better be getting good value for money here coz if they are paying franchise qb money they are getting taken to the cleaners)

i imagine this extension will be backloaded and will open up the cap space the jags need in order to be able to sustain the franchise tag on allen robinson

The Jags will go as far as Blake Bortles will take them, and a defense can only do so much. The fact they didn't at least attempt Cousins first who would have been a major improvement over Bortles is baffling.

Jags saw this post and was like "LOL, we'll see about that."

my only thought is that they must have got a good deal from the team's perspective - we know it's likely not a large deal because its only an extension through 2020...

for this deal to make sense i think this has to be around 20mill/year avg and will only be 3 years with a nice signing bonus but large roster bonuses in 2019 and 2020 - i think the team then has to be taking a 1st/2nd round pick on a qb who they believe in and will sit them behind bortles for a year or 2 (or 3) - with the backloaded unguaranteed money towards the end of the deal but lower cap hits in year 1 (but bortles gets instant cash in hand) i think this has to be the only way this deal got done...

but when the details come out we'll see how wrong i am lol...

This is Bortles's new contract:

3yr, $54M; 26.5M guaranteed. Deal could go up to $66.5M based in incentives.

I assumed Brees would get something like this, team friendly and helps the Saints sign free agents to go out and win one more Super Bowl with Brees.

Will say though, it is only 3 years and it's the not long term cap destroyer Cousins will be and what other QBs will get in the future.

its not a terrible deal - it likely lowers his cap hit for this year, backloads the deal with money that he might not make and is only a max 3 years

that being said it also takes them completely out of free agency in terms of qb improvement and its obvious from this deal that they dont really view bortles confidently into the future so i think they are nailed on to take a qb high in the draft

Maybe they trust Bortles in terms of not losing games for them and bet on their D and strong running game to take them through playoffs, while having their eyes set on some of the 2017 freshman/sophomore quarterbacks to draft in 2-3 years time?

You don't have to necessarily get one this year though or at the least don't have to spend a first on a QB and gives you more flexibility in the first to fill a need at another position. There could be a mid round guy they like, thinking they are hoping to find a Jimmy G in the second round that can be the guy long term that they can develop.

I actually like the move of locking up Bortles. They were on the verge of guaranteeing him $19M in a couple of weeks if they didn't make a decision on him. Instead, they added a little over $7M guaranteed to lock him up for 2 more years if he happens to have turned into the QB that showed up in 2017. If it doesn't work out, I'd guess it's structured when you can get out of it after the season if you want.

I wonder when the trade details regarding Marcus Peters will be out. We knew right away all the details about Alex Smith being traded. Yet we know nothing about what the Rams gave up to get Peters.

bortles wasnt as bad as many are making him out to be, when he played mobile and used his feet he made things happen(see: entire playoff run) and looking at the numbers he was pretty efficient, they could do much better but they could also do much worse. his career statline looks quite a bit like joe flaccos but with some pretty solid rushing numbers, and in the playoffs when they began designing qb runs he looked far better. i see the jags in the same light as the ravens around 2010 when we signed boldin and our offensive weaponry began to heat up, great defense, great run game, efficient qb with sporadic moments of big play and bonehead play, some solid but not spectacular pass catchers, the one difference is that we had an excellent OL up until 2013 and the jags OL needs work. and with this contract, the jags can actually make moves, unlike the ravens when they signed flacco.

i see nothing wrong with the bortles signing, and if the playbook is tailored to his skillset then he can be efficient enough to win, as long as you arent asking him to win a shootout with brady.
