Around the NFL: News and Rumors

@cdp - maybe this is what you were thinking of when you said you thought you couldnt have more than 5 year deals - basically looks like the whole signing bonus has to be accounted on the cap over the first 5 years

really odd for 2 RBs to be on there

To be fair both contracts are fairly fresh. It also makes sense when you realize most RBs know they only get to cash in once whereas WRs and DBs and especially QBs all get to cash in multiple times so they are only looking for 4 year deals.

so it's an enormous deal that looks to be averaging over 45m/yr over the 10 years but doesnt have any permutations attached to the cap number - maybe they're expecting a market saturation but in 10 years time 45/yr might mean a completely different thing (especially when you look at what 24m/yr meant only 7 years ago

Thanks. I wonder how they set up the contract. He must have an termination option. Injury guarantees are low compared to the total volume.

As others have mentioned the bonus proration expires after the 2024 season so there might be a player or mutual termination clause after that year to allow Mahomes to re-up for more guaranteed money and/or sign a new deal if the cap increases significantly, especially if the contract is not tied to the cap.

over half a billion... wow

my guess then with that wording is that there are some years that are basically like option years later in the deal but when the options are exercised they are mostly fully guaranteed

So what is the plus side for the chiefs in this deal. I don't understand. It's not like mahomes wouldn't sign a 10 year 50 mil/yr fully guaranteed deal two years from now even if he manages to win two more superbowls. They are just taking on two years of injury risk. The only QB who could set the market and raise the QB rate between now and then is Dak, and he's definitely not making much more than 40,if that.

Salary cap inflation? Presumably they can build better team around him if his pay doesn't go up with cap increases.
