The Defense, the Turnovers, and the Redzone

I was critical of him right before the draft, I criticized taking him over Simmons on draft night.

I’m no expert, I don’t watch film after they hit the pros, I see clips and live games and that’s it, but I see some of what concerned me in college.

He has been a pretty nice tackler I’ll say, I think I recall one miss but overall he’s come downhill fast and decisive and makes strong tackles at times

right now starks looks like his head's swimming a bit with the speed of the game

he did have one play where he was slightly late on sunday but it almost felt like making the right read (even if slightly late) and being in proximity when the receiver dropped it gave him a bit of confidence

as he gets more up to speed i think we'll see him start breaking on stuff earlier - right now i think the whole defence is terrified of giving up big plays so are playing fairly conservative on the backend

i think if they start stacking games like last week, they'll improve, especially as Roquan should nominally improve the underneath coverage as well

It just irks me (well........US) that players on a then 1-4 football is being out "wanted" by a then 3-win team.

The part about the OLine that nobody seems to want to say out loud is that Linderbaum is a tad soft and overrated. I remember Jason kelce having similar problems against maulers but he added the strength in about yr 3-4 and went on to be HoF. Linderbaum hasn't and he needs physical guys around him at the G spots to shine. I understand he is a very good center, top 5. But he isn't great and at that position you only pay up for great, very good doesn't get a whole lot of WAR at C. I'd bet good money this team would look better with Bullock right now. They need a masher up front and just don't have anyone.

kelce needed help at guard his whole career but he was such an amazing run blocker that the eagles were happy to live with any small downsides

He’s definitely overrated by league wide perception, he’s closer to above average than elite, but he is a quality starter.

It will hurt to pay him what he would be offered on the market, but also when our OL is so suspect you really don’t wanna lose one of your top 2 starters

But you do agree the problem on that line is they lack nastiness. they are all technicians. Even the 380 lb dude is a finesse guy who'd rather get in your way than stomp you into the turf.

i've often said this OL group has a finish problem
but that's also why ben cleveland never made it on this team and also why john simpson was surprisingly hard to replace

Just trying to workout at the gym early, feelin good, got a good workout going. Look up randomly at the tv and bam, TV shows all our fuck ups from the rams game lmao

one thing about Leary. He wouldn't have thrown the ball away on 4th down. Atleast he would have tried to complete the ball, even if it was to the wrong team.

i mean i dont think either of them threw it away on 4th down
think huntley especially tried his best to put the ball in play but had literally nowhere else to throw the ball

Feel like this is a good illustration of our zone problems. Starks bit when he shouldn’t have, yes. But you also have Gilman who theoretically should have the other half of the end zone pulled to the outside.

But the biggest problem is that you have 3 guys that sat in zone for the underneath route despite only one guy being an option there.

It’s simple film work. Rams ran a decoy route to open up the look they wanted because it’s consistently a problem. I’m not half as smart as these football lifers and I can pick up on the same issues over and over again.

With that being said, these issues seem to be much less prevalent this week compared to previous ones.

That is terrible play.

Another week, another clip of this dude whiffing and ending up on his ass.

It’s like we get this and the Harbaugh face weekly now. They really do make a good pair.

DF must have private pictures of Harbaugh and EDC at an NYE party or something because what the fuck

I don't know what they injected CJ Okoye with but he's developed pretty damn well as a run stuffer since preseason. Felt like it was all muscle keeping him afloat, because the technique was not great. Now he's out here stacking and shedding like he's been doing it for 20 years. They've done some really good work with him. Not a lot of fast twitch or pass rush ability obviously, but it seems he grew fast and there's room for a guy like him on this roster.

Also like how they deployed Trenton Simpson this week and hope that unlocks what he can be. Looked like a lot more SLB responsibilities which lets him play faster.

with CJ Okoye it was endurance and technique holding him back
but you saw flashes of explosive technique

he's so new to the game that any live reps was always going to help him develop at an exponential rate

him getting live reps is one of the few positives for this team - especially because you're creating cheap depth with contractual control with legit traits at the position

and as you say, he's really developing as a run-stuffing nose - still need to get better with the disengaging which is what prevents him being a good pass rusher right now too (so late to try and get hands off him) - if he could develop a chop or a swim he could become a factor on passing downs more than just a pocket integrity guy

the other huge positive for me, is that even though he's clearly not 100%, Travis Jones is awesome - and it's really a shame that he and beeks didn't get to play together this year that much because you basically have to double-team both of those guys because they both absolutely murder guys 1v1 - just makes me so sad that beeks is out for the year because i think watching the all-22 from sunday, this defence really is so close to clicking (which is not something i thought i'd be saying)

he's skyrocketed to the top of my free agent rankings of guys i'd want to retain

Probably goes:
Travis Jones
Tyler Linderbaum
Pat Ricard
---Gap---
Isaiah Likely
---Gap---
Everyone else

a lot of young guys are growing up in this front 7:
Teddye Buchanan continues to show a lot of promise

Trenton Simpson had his best game for a while as a raven while being deployed more in space

Mike Green looked good setting the EDGE - used his long arm well - his big problem right now is he's not firing off the ball on obvious passing downs, he's slow-playing the get-off and it's reducing his ability to win high-side rushes or threaten to bend the edge - obviously level of competition is a factor (as is offensive scheme not giving you obvious passing downs to tee off) but he looks like a different rusher than he did in preseason - on the plus side, the run game stuff has proved he's got pro level power and anchor... technique will improve but i think that's why they were clearly ok letting oweh go, because green's been outplaying him as an edge setter the whole season - i do think he's being hindered by not having a lot of opportunities to line up in a wide-9 and just get after it but it's not necessarily been earned tbh

CJ Okoye, as discussed above, has taken huge strides the last couple of weeks

I agree with a good portion of this. I'm still of the opinion that the larger issue is scheme and not putting these players in a position to succeed consistently. Injuries don't help either. But I felt this game was a really big step in the right direction for the defense and trying to counteract whatever scheme issues we had previously. But the players looked to have been actually playing well when you look at them individually - everyone just felt a lot more confident out there both from a mental/game standpoint and just seemingly knowing what they should have been doing.

You can see the potential for a defensive turnaround but we absolutely have to get the pass rush going if it's going to get there.
