The Andrews, the Defense, and the Blocking

I am a bit concerned about the Chargers given how our run defense has looked and they have a strong defense of their own. I think they match up well against us.
And it looks like Herbert is trying to put himself in the top QB conversation based on his start this year. He's been so good.

And that's what kinda sucks... it looks like we have a good draft class. A bulk of those guys are contributing off the bat which is nice. But it still feels like a little gut punch to watch Philly bully their way to a SB win and we follow that up by opting to really not touch the starting OL at all (maybe a healthy Emery Jones changes this) and only add Peebles to the iDL.
I totally forgot about Emery. Right now he is my only hope to improve this OL. Rosengarten looks like he forgot to play football, maybe he thought he would move to LT. I joke but he hasn't been good. Then again, it is hard to do well if the G play is also bad, but come on man.

We need an OL change and to add someone to DL for the run, which is what we all said after the Draft and during it.

Yeah I don't think the run defense had much of a shot against the Detroit offense, they just wore us down and it wasn't pretty. Probably missing Pierce a bit in that regard. Also a couple key guys out in the pass rush department and no one else really stepped up although credit to Detroit, they have some dudes up front.

It is still early in the season so time to make a key trade or 2 to shore up the defense, I think they will have to if they want to fix some of these issues on the line. I won't say coaching is perfect but I do think the issue last night is the Lions were just better in the trenches and I don't think any coaching was going to fix that. The good news is most teams aren't stacked in the trenches like the Lions but it is a concern come playoff time.

The more concerning thing for me was the offense, kinda curious to hear why there were so many sacks, was Lamar holding onto the ball too long trying to make something happen, was the line getting beat like a drum, a bit of both? They will need to shore that unit up for sure if they want to do anything this year. May be worth making some changes here as well, potentially a trade is something to consider as well. I do think the Lions playing ball control kept their defense fresher so they could keep making plays at the end.

This is the first game since the Eagles one last year where I felt the Ravens just got straight up beat by a better team.

I won't get too worked up over losing competitive games to the Lions and Bills as I think the back half of the schedule is where we can make a run with the right adjustments and outside maybe the Packers or Rams, these are the best teams we will play this year.
Great take. The better team won last night, this wasn’t the team to go up against missing 2 D line and Pat.

Lamar holding the ball too long is a tough one. I mean it’s a direct product of him often being able to make something out of nothing in those situations. But I think he needs to recognize when a D is playing him tough and know when to throw it away. All but 1 or 2 of those sacks were avoidable.

For sure, but playing @ La or Indy instead of at home isn't a deal breaker. Heck we might even enjoy the better conditions.

Sucks we lost . The lions beat the ravens butts in the trenches and it basically just showed the weakness the team has both on defense and offense. Can't really run the ball or get after the quarter if the trenches can get abused like they did but regardless of it all the game was still pretty close until the end. I think the team has to consider making a trade. It also might be in this teams best interest to sign CJ Gardner Johnson. This team needs more attitude cause these young guys thats playing need to stay focus. Overall I think the team will be ok.

Stuff like this happens. It even happened when Ray Lewis and Ed Reed were playing. Sometimes good teams just get butts whipped. It happens.

they drafted jones knowing he was injured though - can't really give them a pass for that

so many teams went heavy on the interior OL and DL to the extent that they "reached" on guys which obviously makes it hard to "reach" for those guys yourselves

but there were options when we picked jones and buchanan on the DL (and later)... guys who i really liked, including Peebles too:

Jordan Phillips
Jamaree Caldwell
Aeneas Peebles (who we eventually picked)
Joshua Farmer

OL was much harder to find in the mid rounds but there were still some guys to like:

Jared Wilson
Marcus Mbow
Willie Lampkin (went udfa)
Miles Frazier
Cameron Williams
Seth McLaughlin
Carson Vinson (who we eventually picked... but was always going to be very much a project)

tbh he was already there

was clearly 5th at worst, the lack of big personality and lack of playoff success is what's held him back from being considered as part of that top 4 that everyone talks about

but i really like Steven Ruiz at the ringer and he had him over Burrow even before week 1 this year

I guess the mods didn’t like my pessimistic next up thread….

If we could only win one out of Lions Chiefs, even if Lions are better, symbolically I’d rather have Cheifs. Maybe they’ll play with pride, idk.

Seemed like the Lions were able to channel their revenge from 2023 on us, can we ever get revenge?

Yeah, no. I deleted it immediately. I get feeling sorry for ourselves, but not to this extent.

I don't think Ive ever been so mad at a Ravens team since its inception.

So far very much an underachieving team with a lack of killer instinct.

I'll tell you the Lions showed a killer instinct in spades last night.

Please don't give EDC any more encouragement that adding more DBs is the solution to every problem. That's what got us into this mess.
He could have signed fucking Clowney who knows our system but no no lets not do that. We dont need the pass rushing help!!!!!!!!

Fuck!

This may not be a popular opinion but hear me out.

I don't think EDGE is the biggest issue on this team. I said that before, and say it again now. Clowney would've been a good add, and I even said I would like him signed back at his release. I am with you on this, because Clowney can set the edge. He is better than David Ojabo or any other clown behind Van Noy. He does stunt the growth of guys like Isaac, Green, but when you want to win a Super Bowl growth be damned to an extent.

With that said, I don't think our defense is so bad because of edge--not this year, at least. The reality is we are getting beat at IDL. Even with Madubuike we had some struggles there, but it seems we don't have someone really next to Madubuike to clog the middle like Pierce. Predictably, we are missing him a lot. What we witnessed last night is we lost the middle of our defense, which impacts the entire backbone of your defense in the secondary and linebackers.

In short, we need someone to step up after Madubuike because if not we are in major trouble. DeCosta should be trading for a guy if we can't guarantee Madubuike is back. Even if he returns, it is worth having someone. Washington is part of the problem too on our defense. He just isn't that good. Look at our DL and tell me who actually scares you? Even if it's Mike Green or Oweh, sure you double them then what? You can go one on one with our 2 DT and win potentially depending on Travis Jones. That assumes you actually need to double both Oweh & Green.

We have a dire need at DT.

I think the ravens need a safety they can trust to give Kyle Hamilton more freedom to do what he does best. Seems like the secondary is playing passive to possibly protect Malaki Starks and to likely mask the lack of consistent pass rush. I also suggested CJ Gardner Johnson cause he likely could add more attitude to the defense but I will admit I don't know a lot about his ability. Not sure if he can pay that Geno Stone role but maybe he could.

He just complained about his role in Houston and got cut for it. He’s not going to fit in this locker room.
