The Offensive Line Thread

Hurst and Bergstrom are the most unphysical tandem in the league. As much as elumenors personality rubs me the wrong way i still think hes worth a shot at RG and hopefully in a couple of weeks we'll get a big upgrade in a trade for Incognito or carpenter at LG.

Stanley, Carpenter (incognito), Jensen, Elumenor, Howard

The timing of the injury could not have been worse. The Ravens are leaving for London tomorrow which meant that the Ravens only really had three days to call, workout, and get a deal done with a free agent or three days to try to maneuver a trade. That's really difficult to get done on such short notice.

So, let's say they get back from London and get a deal done mid week. There's no chance the new player gets to play against the Steelers on such short notice.

We're looking at week 5 at the earliest for a suitable replacement to suit up for the Ravens.

Hurst isn't a mauler by any stretch but we need to give him some props at the job he's done at LG. He's actually been decent and hasn't screwed up as bad as he could've. He was literally a last resort as Lewis and Siragusa went down to injuries. It could be a lot worse for us.

Philosophy wise I'm hopeful given the way harbs dealt with the rbs by promoting Collins in stead of langford because he practiced better and then giving him the all after the fumble was also promising that harbs has changed his approach a little - suggests to me that if eluemunor or anyone else were to be better than bergstrom then experience be damned they'll play

Hurst has done well pulling which has been useful so I'll give him some credit

I'll be surprised if Bergstrom is the starter for long. Eluemunor, Skura and Bowanko all provide more upside than him. But it really depends on what the team wants out of the position. Eluemunor is the biggest mauler in the group, Skura probably gives them the most success on pulls. I honestly don't know very much about Bowanko, but all-in-all I think that Bergstrom being more than a spot starter isn't good.

Bergstrom most likely got the nod based on experience. Hes by far the oldest of the group at 31. Bowanko is more our backup center at this point. Hes an athletic and long center being 6'6. Ive always liked the idea of having him at center and moving Jensen to RG. Bowanko can use his length and athleticism to get to second level blockers in the running game. I just worry he wont hold up against pocket pushers.

Im hoping that the Collins move is a sign the old dog is learning new tricks, since we all know how bad he is about making adjustments.

He's not that bad (he's certainly better than most of the league at adjusting - maybe testament to how stubborn the rest of the league is) - he's just not bill bellichek good - but given how he reveres bellichek I'm hopeful that this is something he's consciously improving

I know the consensus seems to be that we need to draft o-line next year but I was thinking about what we already have. Next year could be good. If Jensen and Howard continue to play well, Yanda returns and Stanley remains good then we add whoever looks best out of Lewis, Siragusa and Elumunor at LG and have a really good line. I know there are a lot of ifs, but none of them are too unlikely, and if it all works we could finally draft an offensive playmaker early and add some O-line depth later.

I'd take a first round guard/center and not think twice about it. Lewis is probably the future at tackle and Yanda is probably nearing the end. Need replacements for those two.

But this isn't how our FO works. You know we didn't need to draft Humphrey or Wormley, but we still did because:
1) This FO craves for value picks.
2) Ozzie likes to build depth, especially in the tenches and in the secondary.

There are way too many "ifs" to your theory for someone like Ozzie or DeCosta to say "Okay let's not care too much about it". I'm not saying they will draft a first round IOL, but if the BPA is one when we pick they'll run to the podium, because it makes us feel safe about potential injuries/retirements/suspensions that happen so fast to a team like ours.

I agree, thats how we've become so strong on defense and yet so depleted on the oline. Even at full strength RT, LG and C remain works in progress, Jensen has been good but hes a flag magnet.

I'm more expecting something along the lines of 2 DL, 2LB, 1CB & a 6th round RB with our 7th used for Bergstrom.

If bergstrom and bowanko fulfill their conditions then we probably won't have a 6th and a 7th

But I agree generally with those above that if ol is the bpa round 1 then we take them - especially given the scarcity of good olineman around the league and in college as well

I all seriousness, I agree with you that that's what they should do. Then again, how often has Ozzie and Eric done anything that we might expect. You could probably count the instances on one hand.
